Unearthed Witnesses Of Torture Lost To Ravages Of Decomposition

The discovery of mass graves in Gaza paints a distressing picture of the atrocities unfolding in the region.

These graves, containing the remains of hundreds of individuals, bear witness to the horrors of brutality.

Thursday, April 25, 2024, marked the sixth day in a row of medics and civil defence workers recovering bodies from the mass grave in Nasser hospital.

A press conference held by Palestinian civil defence officials in Gaza’s southern district of Rafah regarding the discovery of mass graves around Gaza’s Nasser and al-Shifa hospitals has shed more light on the issue.

Yamen Abu Sulaiman, the head of the civil defence department in Khan Younis, where Nasser Hospital is located, disclosed that three separate mass graves have been found at the facility; one behind the morgue, one in front of the morgue and one near the dialysis building.

Palestinian health workers unearth a body buried by Israeli forces in Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, on April 21, 2024.

He said that bodies were “stacked together” in the mass graves and showed indications of field executions having taken place.

Yamen Abu Sulaiman stated that out of 392 bodies recovered in Gaza’s mass graves, only 65 have been identified by relatives.

“The majority of the bodies remain unidentified because of advanced decomposition or mutilation,” he said, pointing to evidence that some victims may have been tortured.

Additionally, Abu Sulaiman called on the international community to exert pressure to “put an immediate end to this aggression against our people,” as well as for humanitarian organisations and international media to be let into Gaza to “examine these crimes.”

According to Palestinian Civil Defence member, Mohammed Mughier, who provided photographic and video evidence of several of their remains, some of the bodies found in mass graves at Nasser Hospital belong to children.

“Why do we have children in mass graves?” he said, adding that the evidence shows Israeli soldiers committed “crimes against humanity.”

Mughier revealed that ten bodies found in Gaza’s mass graves had their hands bound while others still had medical tubes attached to them, indicating they may have been buried alive.

“We need forensic examination for approximately 20 bodies for people who we think were buried alive,” Mughier said.

The implications of these findings are profound and demand immediate attention from the international community.

International demands for an independent investigation into mass graves uncovered at Gaza’s Nasser and Al-Shifa medical facilities has soared.

Early on Thursday, the White House stated that it wants “answers” from Israeli authorities after the discovery of mass graves at Gaza hospitals destroyed in Israeli sieges.

“We want answers. We want to see this thoroughly and transparently investigated,” National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan told reporters.

Moreover, Palestinian Civil Defence member, Mohammed al-Mughier noted that his team is ready to prepare an evidential report for an independent investigation into the mass graves discovered at Gaza’s Nasser Hospital.

“This can be the foundation for work to be conducted by an international investigation committee – we are ready to help their work in order to push the Israelis to refrain from committing crimes against people in Gaza,” he told a news agency.

Mughier also described the impact of working for the past months in the strip. Some aid workers are traumatised after failing to save the life of people they tried to rescue.

“Some of our members are suffering traumas which is impacting the way we can carry our work,” he said.

Others were infected as they resumed dead bodies from under the rubble without necessary precaution due to the lack of equipment
