In a resounding commitment to fostering a vibrant and responsible media landscape in Ghana, the Information Minister-designate, Mrs. Fatimatu Abubakar, has announced the government’s unwavering dedication to creating an enabling environment for free and responsible media practice. Mrs. Abubakar made these remarks during her tour of several media houses in Accra as part of comprehensive stakeholder engagements within the media sector.

Emphasizing the pivotal role of the media in national development, Mrs. Abubakar underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing the capacity of journalists through various initiatives. One such initiative highlighted by the Minister-designate is the imminent commencement of the Ministry of Information’s third Media Capacity Enhancement Programme, signaling a proactive approach to bolstering journalistic skills and professionalism.

Mrs. Abubakar extended an invitation for media support and participation in the upcoming 3rd Africa Media Convention, slated for May 15-17, 2024. This convention stands as a significant platform for fostering dialogue, sharing best practices, and advancing the agenda of media development across the continent.

“The convention is to reflect on the fundamental role of journalism on the continent, celebrate fundamental principles of press freedom and deliberate on measures to safeguard media freedom, promote access to information, the safety of journalists and media visibility in Africa Union member states.”

Addressing representatives from media houses, Mrs. Abubakar commended their dedication to upholding professionalism and utilizing their platforms to facilitate constructive national discourse. Central to Mrs. Abubakar’s vision is the imperative of forging stronger collaboration between the media and government. The 3rd Africa Media Convention represents a critical juncture for media professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders to converge and deliberate on pertinent issues shaping the media landscape in Africa. With a theme centered around “Empowering Media for Sustainable Development,” the convention aims to explore strategies for harnessing the full potential of the media to drive positive change and foster inclusive growth.

The convention’s agenda encompasses a wide array of topics ranging from the role of media in promoting good governance and democracy to leveraging digital innovation for enhanced media effectiveness. Workshops, panel discussions, and networking sessions will provide participants with valuable insights and opportunities for collaboration.

Participation in the Africa Media Convention holds immense significance for Ghana and the broader African continent.
