The leader and founder of the National Liberation Congress (NLC), Stephen Atubiga has shared his vision for Ghana’s future in breaking NPP-NDC Doupoly.

Mr. Atubiga recounted how he broke away from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to form the NLC, and criticized the NDC’s shift towards capitalism and its neglect of socialist principles. He criticized that the NDC although depicted as a socialist party but then the NDC filing fee does not represent the poor and to this effect, Mr. Atubiga claimed that there is no future for a young person in the NDC party.

Mr. Atubiga argued that NLC aims to provide a platform for the youth and the poor to participate in politics.

“Our filing fee will be cheaper so that your 3 months to 1-year salary can help you participate in the internal election of the party.”

Moreover, Mr. Atubiga emphasized the need for Ghana to be run like a business entity to move the country forward.

“In this country, we have between 35 to 40,000,000 Ghanaians. You have less than 1,000,000 people on the government’s payroll, [ about] 10,000,000 out of it are children. [That is to say about] 20,000,000 are adults in the private sector.”

In this regard, Mr. Atubiga noted that Ghana’s population is significant, but the number of people on government payroll is relatively small. He suggested that the country needs to adopt a business-like approach to governance to tap into the potential of its population. Mr. Atubiga drew inspiration from the Singapore government, which has a smaller population but a significant number of banks. He proposed that Ghana needs to establish more banks to support its economy.

“So this country, we need to have [ and that] establish more banks, [in] Every sector of the economy, [so that} all the ministry [and] government sectors have banks that are backing it.”

Mr. Atubiga suggested that each sector of the economy, including government ministries, should have banks that support their activities. He proposed a plan to create banks ranging from smaller to bigger ones.

“And how do we do that? “Immediately, we take over power. We’re going to make [ sure] we create smaller banks from bigger banks.”

Mr. Atubiga argued that the NLC aimed to promote economic growth and development in Ghana. By establishing more banks and providing financial support to various sectors of the economy.

Youth Empowerment and the Fight against “Galamsey”

Moreover, Mr. Atubiga emphasized the need for a system that prepares students for the market right after school.

Mr. Atubiga further acknowledged that illegal mining cannot be stopped without structures in place to accommodate miners. He also proposed a partnership between technical schools and the government to provide practical training for students.

“We don’t see the reason why you’re going to read entomology. What are you coming out to do? You are going to be in the unemployment sector. To this effect, the [NLC] will package you to learn something that [by the time you are done], you are ready for the market. Our technical schools will come out and the students will maintain government vehicles as their practical work. They will maintain government buildings as their practical work.”

Regarding taxation, Mr. Atubiga suggested a system where businesses are given devices to track sales and automatically pay taxes. He further pointed out that there’s a mechanism that there’s a device given to all shops. You cluster them. So, they will give them the special receipt roll. Anytime you buy something, the government’s OSS goes to a special place.

“We must make room to be able to accommodate the mining. Why do we make them illegal? They are illegal because structures are not being put in place to accommodate them.”

Mr. Atubiga proposed that the NLC would distribute land to miners and charge them to reclaim the land after use. “Once they are mining, the government will make its taxes, and there will be a certain amount that will be charged to reclaim the land back,” he added.

Mr. Stephen Atubiga also highlighted his vision for Ghana’s future, emphasizing the need for a socialist approach that prioritizes the poor and the youth while seeking to break the Duopoly.
