Positioned in the Ahafo Region, the project represents a major expansion of Newmont’s footprint in Ghana and is anchored in a philosophy of inclusive development.
According to Mr. Bissue, Newmont is committed to building a legacy that extends far beyond gold production.
“In the Ahafo Region of Ghana, Newmont is not just mining gold – we are setting a new global gold standard.
“This project is about more than profit. It’s about people, partnerships, and progress.”

Since its inception in 2002, the Ahafo North project has evolved through extensive community engagement and planning.
With construction well underway and commercial production on the horizon, Newmont anticipates the mine will remain operational generating revenue, employment, and social investment along the way.
“This project will extend our economic presence and contributions in Ghana for at least two decades, delivering value to our shareholders, the local communities, and the nation as a whole.”

The project aligns with Newmont’s broader sustainability goals and the Ghanaian government’s industrial and employment priorities.
Mr. Bissue highlighted that strategic partnerships with local governments and traditional authorities have paved the way for a smooth development process, fostering community trust and local empowerment.
Driving Inclusive Workforce

A key pillar of Ahafo North’s strategy is talent development. Newmont is investing heavily in building a pipeline of skilled professionals drawn from local communities.
“We are investing in talent development to build future skills and strengthen our workforce pipeline from within Newmont and our communities.”

Gender equality is also at the heart of the company’s workforce strategy. The project aims to achieve gender parity an ambitious but essential target in an industry long dominated by men.
“Ghana has great talent across the gender divide, and we believe we can achieve a 50-50 balance of male and female employees on site.”

Newmont is known globally for its commitment to sustainable mining practices, and Ahafo North is being developed with strict adherence to international environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards.
The company is implementing robust safeguards to protect ecosystems, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance community resilience.

Stakeholder engagement has remained central to this process, with multiple forums held to address local concerns and promote transparency.
“As we move forward with the Ahafo North project, our values and purpose remind us of our commitment not only to operational excellence, but to being a responsible steward of the resources and a credible and trusted development partner of Ghana.”

Newmont’s approach reflects a broader shift in Ghana’s mining sector from extractive activity to value-driven industrial development.
The company’s focus on shared prosperity, workforce diversity, and environmental integrity has positioned Ahafo North as a model for future projects in Ghana and beyond.
The project’s progression also coincides with the Ghanaian government’s push for deeper local content, greater beneficiation, and enhanced revenue retention from natural resources.
As the country aims to use its mineral wealth to fuel green industrialization and job creation, partnerships like Ahafo North are increasingly vital.
As WAMPEX 2025 continues, industry stakeholders are expected to draw inspiration from Newmont’s inclusive and transparent approach highlighting how global best practices can be localized for impact.
