The African Union is celebrating its annual African Union Day with a strong call for unity, solidarity, and progress across the continent. H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, stated that today serves as an opportunity to reflect on achievements while reaffirming Africa’s collective vision for the future.

The commemoration traces its roots to the Sirte Declaration of September 9, 1999, when African leaders resolved to establish the African Union. At that moment, Youssouf explained, it became a turning point for the continent, laying the groundwork for deeper cooperation, integration, and a shared Pan-African vision.

Africa’s Strides In Peace, Economy, And Innovation

As the statement outlined, the commemoration comes at a time when the continent has recorded progress in several areas. Youssouf highlighted peace and stability initiatives, conflict resolution mechanisms, and Africa’s economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as key milestones.

The Chairperson also emphasized the importance of innovation and transformation. He praised Africa’s momentum in renewable energy, digital technology, and youth empowerment, adding that these sectors are positioning the continent as an emerging global player.

“Our continent is making remarkable strides in renewable energy, digital innovation, and youth empowerment, strengthening Africa’s position as a key player on the global stage,” he said.

Call For Unity Under Agenda 2063

The Chairperson’s core message was a renewed commitment to solidarity and collective action under Agenda 2063, the African Union’s long-term development framework. Youssouf urged governments, the private sector, civil society, and youth groups to unite in shaping a future where every African enjoys dignity and opportunity.
