The African Union is celebrating its annual African Union Day with a strong call for unity, solidarity, and progress across the continent. H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, stated that today serves as an opportunity to reflect on achievements while reaffirming Africa’s collective vision for the future.
The commemoration traces its roots to the Sirte Declaration of September 9, 1999, when African leaders resolved to establish the African Union. At that moment, Youssouf explained, it became a turning point for the continent, laying the groundwork for deeper cooperation, integration, and a shared Pan-African vision.
“Today, we celebrate African Union Day with pride and renewed commitment to our shared vision of a united, prosperous, and peaceful Africa. This day commemorates the Sirte Declaration of 9 September 1999, when African leaders agreed to establish the African Union. That historic decision laid the foundation for stronger continental unity, cooperation, and integration.”

The African Union Day, Youssouf noted, serves as both a celebration and a reminder of the journey undertaken by the continent. “African Union Day honors our collective journey, the resilience of our people, and the enduring spirit of Pan-Africanism that continues to inspire and bind us together,” he said.

Africa’s Strides In Peace, Economy, And Innovation
As the statement outlined, the commemoration comes at a time when the continent has recorded progress in several areas. Youssouf highlighted peace and stability initiatives, conflict resolution mechanisms, and Africa’s economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as key milestones.
“As we mark this milestone, we recognize the significant progress made across the continent, from advancing peace and stability and progress in conflict resolution efforts in the continent to Africa’s growing economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area.”

The Chairperson also emphasized the importance of innovation and transformation. He praised Africa’s momentum in renewable energy, digital technology, and youth empowerment, adding that these sectors are positioning the continent as an emerging global player.
“Our continent is making remarkable strides in renewable energy, digital innovation, and youth empowerment, strengthening Africa’s position as a key player on the global stage,” he said.
Call For Unity Under Agenda 2063
The Chairperson’s core message was a renewed commitment to solidarity and collective action under Agenda 2063, the African Union’s long-term development framework. Youssouf urged governments, the private sector, civil society, and youth groups to unite in shaping a future where every African enjoys dignity and opportunity.
“We reaffirm our dedication to the principles of solidarity, integration, and sustainable development. Together, we strive to overcome challenges across peace and security, economic transformation, and social progress, while seizing the immense opportunities that lie ahead under Agenda 2063.”

The Chairperson stressed that collaboration across all sectors is essential to the vision of a prosperous and resilient Africa. “Let us continue to work hand in hand, governments, private sector, civil society, youth, and partners, to build a continent where every African can thrive in dignity and hope,” he added.
The celebration was framed as both a recognition of history and a forward-looking moment. The African Union Day, he said, is not only about commemorating the decision taken 25 years ago but also about reaffirming Africa’s enduring spirit of resilience and unity in the face of modern challenges.
“Happy African Union Day to all!” Youssouf concluded.
Across the continent, leaders, institutions, and citizens joined together to mark the day, reflecting on Africa’s achievements and the work still needed to deliver on the promises of unity and shared prosperity.
