Expert Reveals Winning Strategy for Ghana Stock Investors

Ghana Stock Exchange

The Ghana Stock Exchange delivered one of its strongest performances in recent history, closing 2025 as the second-best performing stock exchange in Africa.

The market posted an impressive year-to-date return of 137.40 percent in dollar terms, a performance that firmly positioned Ghana among the continent’s top investment destinations. In local currency terms, investors on the GSE enjoyed a solid 79.14 percent return, reflecting sustained confidence in listed equities despite prevailing macroeconomic pressures.

This remarkable showing places the GSE ahead of several larger African markets, underscoring the growing appeal of Ghana’s capital market to both domestic and foreign investors. Only Malawi’s Malawi All Share Index, which recorded a 251.34 percent return in dollar terms, outperformed Ghana in 2025.

By the close of trading on December 30, 2025, the total market capitalisation of the Ghana Stock Exchange stood at GH¢171.87 billion. This valuation reflects a year marked by renewed appetite for equities, supported by improved corporate earnings, strategic capital raising activities, and increased participation from institutional investors.

Market analysts say the expansion in capitalisation demonstrates a deeper and more resilient equity market. It also highlights the role of the GSE in mobilising long-term capital for businesses, particularly as Ghana’s economy continues to stabilise and reposition itself for growth.

Broad-Based Gains Across Listed Stocks

Out of the 36 equities listed on the exchange, 21 recorded price gains during the year. This broad-based performance suggests that the rally was not limited to a few dominant stocks but spread across multiple sectors of the economy. Financial stocks, consumer goods companies, and selected industrial players all contributed to the market’s upward momentum.

The positive performance of these stocks reinforced investor confidence and encouraged portfolio diversification, especially among retail investors who increasingly view the stock market as a viable long-term investment channel.

Trading activity on the GSE remained robust throughout the year, even though November recorded a slight slowdown on a month-on-month basis. During that month, a total of 38.61 million shares valued at GH¢192.47 million were traded. This represented a 12.49 percent decline in trading volume and an 11.39 percent drop in value compared to October.

Despite this short-term moderation, overall investor engagement remained strong, with sustained activity across key counters. Market observers note that periodic slowdowns are typical toward year-end and do not detract from the broader positive trend witnessed in 2025.

Strong Year-on-Year Growth in Market Activity

On a year-on-year basis, the performance of the Ghana Stock Exchange was even more striking. Trading volume surged by 312.76 percent, while the total value of trades jumped by an impressive 591.31 percent. These figures point to a market that has significantly deepened, with higher-value transactions and increased participation from both local and foreign investors.

The sharp rise in trading value, in particular, suggests a shift toward higher-priced equities and increased interest from institutional players seeking long-term exposure to Ghana’s growth story.

For the full year, the GSE recorded a total of 683.74 million shares traded, valued at GH¢3.47 billion. While this represented a 28.23 percent decline in trading volume compared to the previous year, the value of trades grew by a strong 73.61 percent. This divergence between volume and value highlights a market transitioning toward quality trades rather than sheer quantity.

Analysts say this trend reflects growing maturity in the market, with investors prioritising fundamentally strong stocks and longer holding periods over speculative short-term trades.

Ghana’s Rising Profile in Africa’s Capital Markets

Closing 2025 as Africa’s second-best performing stock exchange marks a significant milestone for Ghana’s capital market. The GSE’s performance has not only boosted investor wealth but also enhanced the country’s reputation as a credible destination for portfolio investment.

As policymakers continue to pursue reforms aimed at deepening the capital market and improving liquidity, the outlook for the Ghana Stock Exchange remains optimistic. With strong fundamentals, improving corporate governance, and sustained investor interest, the GSE appears well positioned to build on its 2025 success and remain a key player in Africa’s evolving financial landscape.
