The New Patriotic Party has announced the extension of the tenure of its executives at all levels as part of measures to ensure a smooth and orderly conduct of its upcoming internal elections.
The decision was communicated by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah, at a press conference where he outlined the rationale and scope of the extensions approved by the National Council.
According to Mr. Koduah, the National Council took note of the fact that the tenure of several party officers would expire either during the internal electoral process or before the completion of scheduled elections at various levels.
Given the extensive timelines already announced for the internal polls, the Council deemed it necessary to extend the tenure of affected executives to avoid leadership vacuums and administrative disruptions.
He explained that the decision was taken in line with the powers vested in the National Council under the party’s constitution and was intended solely to provide continuity and stability throughout the election period.
Polling Station and Electoral Area Executives Affected
At the grassroots level, polling station executives were among the first category of officers whose tenure required adjustment. Mr. Koduah disclosed that their tenure, which was originally expected to expire on March 5, 2026, has now been extended to May 16, 2026.
This extension is meant to allow polling station executives to remain in office until the conclusion of polling station elections and the validation of results. Similarly, the tenure of electoral area coordinators has been extended from March 20 to June 15, 2026.
The General Secretary noted that these officers play a critical role in supervising activities at the electoral area level and coordinating between polling stations and constituency structures. Extending their tenure ensures continuity during the transition from polling station elections to electoral area contests.
He stressed that without these extensions, the party would risk administrative gaps that could undermine the credibility and smooth execution of the internal elections.
Constituency and Chapter Executives Granted Extensions
The National Council also approved extensions for constituency executives, whose tenure has been adjusted from April 24 to July 12, 2026. Mr. Koduah explained that constituency executives are central to organizing elections, resolving disputes, and providing logistical support across multiple stages of the internal process.
He added that allowing their tenure to expire midstream would complicate coordination and weaken oversight at a crucial time. The extension, he said, ensures that constituency leadership remains intact until new officers are duly elected and inducted. In addition, chapter executives have had their tenure extended from April 24 to July 19, 2026.
Mr. Koduah clarified that chapters refer to specific party structures, including those operating outside the traditional constituency framework. Their continued leadership, he said, is essential for maintaining organizational coherence during the internal electoral calendar.
Diaspora, Regional and National Executives Covered
The extension decision also affects executives of the party’s diaspora branches. According to the General Secretary, branch executives within the party’s external branches will now remain in office from May 22 to August 9, 2026.
He emphasized that these are NPP diaspora branches and not any other branch structures, noting the importance of clarity given past misunderstandings. Regional executives have likewise had their tenure extended from May 22 to August 9, 2026.
Mr. Koduah explained that regional leadership will be required to supervise constituency elections, handle appeals, and support preparations for regional and national contests. Maintaining continuity at the regional level, he said, is vital to ensuring consistency in the application of party rules and procedures.
At the national level, the tenure of national executives has been extended from July 16 to September 20, 2026. This extension aligns with the scheduled dates for the National Executive Elections, which are expected to conclude on September 20.
Mr. Koduah noted that the extension allows the current national leadership to oversee the entire internal electoral process and hand over to newly elected officers in an orderly manner.
Ensuring Stability and Constitutional Compliance
Mr. Koduah stressed that the extensions are administrative in nature and do not confer any undue advantage on current office holders. According to him, the decision is rooted in practicality and constitutional compliance rather than political preference.
He explained that the National Council acted after carefully reviewing the internal election timetable and identifying areas where tenure expirations could disrupt the process. By extending the terms of office, the party aims to safeguard institutional memory, maintain discipline, and ensure that disputes are resolved within established structures.
He also assured party members that the extensions will not interfere with the conduct of free and fair internal elections. All eligible members, he said, will still have the opportunity to contest positions when nominations open at the various levels.
Call for Unity and Cooperation
In concluding his remarks, the General Secretary appealed to party members to support the decision and cooperate with existing leadership structures during the election period. He urged members to view the extensions as a temporary but necessary measure designed to protect the integrity of the party’s democratic processes.
Mr. Koduah emphasized that the ultimate objective of the internal elections is to renew the party’s leadership through a transparent and credible process. He expressed confidence that with the tenure extensions in place, the New Patriotic Party is well positioned to conduct its internal elections without unnecessary disruptions.
As the party moves toward a series of grassroots, regional, and national contests, the extension of executive tenures underscores its intention to prioritize stability, order, and constitutional adherence during one of its most extensive internal electoral exercises in recent years.
