The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) has moved to facilitate a sweeping, multi-sectoral expansion plan proposed by Africa World Airlines (AWA), following a high-level strategic meeting between GIPC CEO Simon Madjie and an AWA delegation led by Chief Safety Officer Zhenzhou Lian.

According to the GIPC, the meeting revealed a blueprint that spans from intercontinental aviation hubs to sophisticated pharmaceutical manufacturing and industrial assembly, marking a significant vote of confidence in Ghana’s investment climate, as the airline positions itself as far more than a regional carrier.

“The delegation outlined plans to expand regional routes from Accra to Freetown and Abidjan, with a longer-term vision to position Accra as a regional aviation hub, including potential connectivity to Beijing”

For the Centre, this collaboration deepens the economic partnership between the state and the private sector and represents the exact type of “strategic investment” the agency has been tasked to attract.

At the heart of the discussions was AWA’s ambitious plan to cement Accra’s status as the definitive aviation gateway for West Africa. The delegation’s plans to expand regional connectivity, specifically targeting new routes, is to create a “feeder” network that supports a much larger, intercontinental vision.

As Ghana navigates the industrial complexities of 2026, the convergence of aviation, healthcare, and heavy industry under a single corporate umbrella offers a unique opportunity to accelerate national growth across multiple fronts simultaneously.

AWA noted how positioning Accra as a hub for Chinese-African travel would be a transformative milestone for the Ghanaian aviation sector, leveraging its strategic geographical location and its partnership with the GIPC, to capture a significant share of the growing trade and diplomatic traffic between the two regions.

Mr. Madjie also noted that such a hub would not only increase passenger throughput at Kotoka International Airport but also serve as a magnet for ancillary businesses in the hospitality and logistics sectors.

Strategic Diversification

The GIPC also revealed that the most unexpected outcome of the strategic meeting was AWA’s interest in the Ghanaian healthcare sector, as the airline expressed a serious intent to invest in pharmaceuticals and industrial manufacturing, with a specific focus on high-specialty medical services.

Among the proposed projects were facilities dedicated to In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) services and vaccine-related operations – a pivot into the life sciences that suggests a corporate strategy recognizing the growing demand for specialized healthcare within the sub-region.

Through the establishment of vaccine-related operations in Ghana, AWA and its partners would be contributing directly to national and regional health security – a priority that has remained at the top of the government’s agenda.

It was highlighted during discussions that the GIPC’s role will be to ensure that these investments are met with the “necessary regulatory support and industrial incentives,” to ensure a smooth market entry.

The third pillar of AWA’s expansion strategy involved heavy industry as the airline proposed the establishment of an assembly facility specifically designed to support Ghana’s lucrative mining and construction sectors, indicating a desire to localize the supply chain for heavy machinery and equipment.

This industrial focus aligns perfectly with the GIPC’s mandate to drive local manufacturing and reduce the nation’s reliance on imported components, thus lowering operational costs for firms in the extractive industries.

For the GIPC, a domestic assembly plant would create high-skilled technical jobs and foster technology transfer, ensuring that the Ghanaian workforce gains expertise in specialized mechanical engineering – just as a local assembly hub for the construction sector would provide a more resilient supply of equipment for the nation’s infrastructure projects.

“Mr Madjie reiterated GIPC’s readiness to facilitate these investments and highlighted the 24-hour economy policy as a key enabler of industrial growth. Both parties expressed optimism about future collaboration”

The GIPC boss reiterated the 24-Hour Economy as the primary vessel for AWA’s industrial and aviation ambitions. For an airline operating regional and international flights, and for a manufacturing plant serving mining interests, the ability to operate across three shifts without regulatory or logistical bottlenecks is essential for maximizing productivity and ROI.

The 24-hour economy will provide the necessary framework for Accra to function as a true regional hub, where cargo and passengers can move seamlessly at any hour. For the proposed pharmaceutical and assembly facilities, it ensures that production lines remain active, meeting the high demand of the West African market.

He emphasized the GIPC’s commitment to facilitating these projects under this policy framework, signaling a shift toward a more aggressive and efficient industrial posture.

The partnership between GIPC and AWA represents a new chapter for corporate expansion in Ghana. It moves away from siloed investments and toward an integrated model where logistics, healthcare, and manufacturing support one another.
