Ghana’s music industry has reached a historic milestone as singer-songwriter Moliy becomes the first Ghanaian artist to secure a nomination at the American Music Awards (AMAs).

The landmark nomination places the “Wondergirl” in the highly competitive Best Afrobeats Artist category for the 52nd annual ceremony, scheduled for May 25, 2026, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The announcement has sparked widespread excitement across Ghana and within the diaspora, with many describing it as a defining moment for the country’s global music presence.

Born Moliy Ama Montgomery, the Ghanaian-American artiste rose to prominence following the success of her 2021 collaboration “Sad Girlz Luv Money” with Amaarae. The track achieved international recognition, debuting on the US Billboard Hot 100 and charting strongly in the United Kingdom.

Her AMA nomination, however, represents a new level of global validation. Competing alongside African heavyweights including Burna Boy, Rema, Wizkid and South Africa’s Tyla, Moliy’s inclusion signals a shift in the global Afrobeats narrative.

Industry observers have noted that for years, the international Afrobeats space has been largely dominated by Nigerian acts. Moliy’s nomination challenges that pattern, highlighting Ghana’s growing influence and the global appeal of its Afro-fusion sound.

The ‘Shake It’ Breakthrough

Central to Moliy’s rise is the overwhelming success of her viral hit, “Shake It to the Max (FLY) Remix,” featuring Jamaican stars Shenseea and Skillibeng.

The track evolved from a social media trend into a global phenomenon, dominating charts and digital platforms. It held the number one position on the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs Chart for 22 consecutive weeks and has accumulated over 500 million streams on YouTube Music.

Reflecting on the song’s impact during a red-carpet interview at the BET Awards, Moliy described the milestone as a defining moment in her career.“I think this moment is incredible and our biggest highlight yet in our career”, she said.

She also acknowledged the role of her collaborators, particularly Jamaican producer Silent Addy, in shaping the energetic “Afro-dancehall” sound that resonated globally.

The AMA nomination crowns what has already been a remarkable year for the Accra-born artiste. Earlier in 2026, Moliy emerged as the most-nominated African act at the iHeartRadio Music Awards held at the Dolby Theatre.

She went on to win the prestigious World Artist of the Year award, surpassing nominees such as Tyla and Ayra Starr.

Her reaction to the win quickly went viral, capturing a moment of genuine surprise and gratitude, “Are you serious?”

Moliy later followed up with a more reflective statement.

“I’m truly honored and humbled to receive this award. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of my team, and the incredible support of my fans around the world”.

Rallying Fans and Inspiring the Next Generation

As anticipation builds towards the AMA ceremony, Moliy has actively engaged her fanbase, affectionately known as “Wondergirls and boys,” encouraging them to support her through voting.

In a playful message that resonated widely online, she joked that fans must vote for her for Best Afrobeats Artist “or they’re haters,” blending humour with a strategic push for engagement.

Beyond the lighthearted appeal, the artiste has remained conscious of the broader significance of her achievement. Recently named Africa Rising Star by Apple Music, she reflected on the deeper meaning of her journey.

“This moment right now is everything I’ve been praying for… I’m hoping this shows young girls everywhere that their dreams are valid”.

A Defining Moment for Ghanaian Music

Regardless of the outcome on May 25, Moliy’s nomination has already secured her place in Ghana’s music history. By earning recognition on one of the world’s most influential music platforms, she has opened doors for future Ghanaian artistes seeking global acclaim.

Her success underscores a broader evolution within African music, where diverse sounds and voices are increasingly gaining international attention. For Ghana, in particular, it signals a new era of visibility and influence.

As the countdown to the American Music Awards continues, Moliy’s journey stands not only as a personal triumph but as a symbol of possibility and proof that Ghanaian talent can compete, thrive and be celebrated on the world’s biggest stages.
