Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare says hard work and consistency remain the key ingredients behind his rise with the national team as Ghana intensify preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 33-year-old shot stopper is currently in Wales with the Black Stars squad ahead of an international friendly against Wales in Cardiff, a match expected to test Ghana’s readiness for the Mundial which begins in two weeks across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Asare has quickly established himself as one of the most dependable figures in the national team setup since making his debut in March 2025 during Ghana’s 5-0 victory over Chad in a World Cup qualifier.

The experienced goalkeeper kept a clean sheet on his debut and has since gone on to become one of the leading contenders for Ghana’s number one spot.

Despite his impressive performances for both club and country, the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper insists he is not getting carried away by his growing reputation and understands that competition within the squad means he must continue pushing himself every day.

Speaking after the team’s third training session at Dragon Park in Cardiff, Asare admitted that personal ambition continues to drive him while acknowledging that nothing in football is guaranteed.

“I have this thought that I have to achieve something big for myself. That does not mean if I’m the number one for the national team then I’ve achieved what I wanted. I have to work hard because we have more goalkeepers in the team.”

The Black Stars currently have five goalkeepers in camp ahead of the Wales encounter, although the number will eventually be reduced to three before the final World Cup squad is announced.

Asare’s comments reflect the fierce competition within the goalkeeping department, especially with fellow Hearts of Oak goalkeeper and club teammate Solomon Agbasi also part of the squad.

Asare Preaches Unity in Camp

Asare believes togetherness within the squad will play a huge role in determining Ghana’s success at the World Cup.

The former Great Olympics goalkeeper stressed the importance of unity among players, insisting that those left on the bench must fully support teammates selected to start matches. “If the coach starts another goalkeeper, it doesn’t mean that because I’m the number one, I should be angry,” Asare explained.“We have to stay prayerful and united for collective success.”

Asare further stated that he is “confident” in his abilities and this comes from the hard work he puts in during training sessions and his determination to remain consistent at the highest level.

The goalkeeper has enjoyed a remarkable rise over the last year, becoming one of Ghana’s standout performers during the World Cup qualifying campaign.

He kept five clean sheets in six World Cup qualifying matches, playing a vital role as Ghana secured qualification for the tournament for the fifth time in the nation’s history.

Strong Performances For Hearts of Oak

At club level, Asare was equally outstanding for Hearts of Oak during the Ghana Premier League season.

He helped the Phobians register an incredible 24 clean sheets in 34 league matches, one of the best defensive records in recent domestic football history and helped the team to a third place finish.

Out of those clean sheets, Asare personally accounted for 13, while fellow Black Stars goalkeeper Solomon Agbasi managed 10 for Hearts during the campaign.

His performances have strengthened calls for him to remain Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper heading into the World Cup, although competition from the other keepers such as St. Gallen’s Lawrence Ati Zigi and Joseph Anang (St. Partrick’s Athletics) in camp remains intense.

The upcoming friendly against Wales is expected to provide another important opportunity for the goalkeeper to impress head coach Carlos Queiroz and his technical staff as Ghana fine tune preparations for the global showpiece.

For Asare, however, the mission remains simple. He has to continue working hard, stay focused and help the Black Stars succeed on football’s grandest stage.
