The Municipal Chief Executive of Ablekuma Central, Hon. Frank Nkansah has stated that the demolition of illegal structures at the Agbogbloshie Onion Market is part of efforts to reduce flooding and improve sanitation within the municipality. The Ablekuma Central MCE explained that the exercise follows months of drainage improvement works undertaken across the area.
Honourable Nkansah disclosed that the Assembly has been carrying out dredging and desilting activities since January. He indicated that the interventions were undertaken in response to a directive from President John Dramani Mahama for assemblies to clear waterways and strengthen flood prevention measures.
The Ablekuma Central MCE noted that several drains and water channels have been cleared under the programme. He added that the Assembly identified the Agbogbloshie Onion Market as a critical location requiring further action due to recurring sanitation challenges.
Honourable Nkansah explained that waste generated through commercial activities frequently finds its way into drainage channels around the market. Consequently, cleared drains often become blocked again shortly after desilting exercises have been completed.
The Municipal Chief Executive said the persistent build-up of refuse has contributed to the deterioration of drainage systems in the area. He stressed that such conditions increase the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
Furthermore, Honourable Nkansah described the demolition exercise as a continuation of earlier interventions aimed at restoring the free flow of water. The Ablekuma Central MCE observed that structures erected close to drains have worsened the challenge and limited access for maintenance works.
“We have done a lot of dredging and a lot of desilting. Yet anytime the area is cleared, the filth returns because of the activities taking place here. That is why we have had to continue the exercise.”

The Municipal Chief Executive stated that the Assembly is committed to ensuring that drainage channels are protected from future encroachment. He added that enforcement measures would continue in areas where structures obstruct waterways and undermine sanitation efforts.
Honourable Nkansah added that flood prevention requires sustained action throughout the year. He indicated that assemblies cannot wait until the rainy season before addressing environmental challenges.
The Ablekuma Central MCE also pointed to the importance of maintaining clean surroundings to support public health. He noted that improved sanitation contributes to safer communities and reduces the impact of environmental hazards.
Security Agencies Support Major Clean-up Drive At Agbogbloshie
Honourable Nkansah revealed that the demolition exercise has been supported by the military, the Ghana Police Service, National Security and the National Disaster Management Organisation. He stated that the involvement of the various agencies has ensured a smooth and orderly operation.
The Ablekuma Central MCE expressed confidence that the targeted area would be fully cleared within the next days. He disclosed that additional sanitation activities have been scheduled to complement the ongoing demolition exercise.
Honourable Nkansah said the operation demonstrates government’s commitment to improving environmental conditions in communities across the country. He noted that the initiative aligns with the administration’s efforts to deliver cleaner and safer urban settlements.
The Municipal Chief Executive appealed to residents and traders to support the Assembly’s efforts by avoiding activities that obstruct drains. He emphasised that public cooperation remains essential in preserving gains achieved through clean-up campaigns.
Furthermore, Honourable Nkansah urged community members to discourage the construction of structures on waterways and drainage reservations. He explained that repeated encroachment has made it difficult to sustain previous interventions.
The Ablekuma Central MCE acknowledged the financial investments made by individuals in their properties and businesses. He nevertheless stressed that public safety considerations require decisive action when structures threaten environmental management efforts.

Honourable Nkansah highlighted recent enforcement exercises carried out in other parts of the municipality, including operations at a cattle ranch. He disclosed that additional inspections would target unauthorised cattle rearing activities within residential communities.
The Municipal Chief Executive explained that environmental enforcement would be a key priority in the coming weeks. He added that the Assembly intends to expand monitoring activities to prevent new encroachments.
