The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), working in collaboration with the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), has arrested a key suspect in connection with an ongoing investigation into a 320-kilogram methamphetamine shipment valued at approximately US$296 million, marking the first major breakthrough in efforts to dismantle an international drug trafficking syndicate linked to Australia.

The arrest, announced by NACOC in a press release issued on June 24, 2026, follows months of intelligence led investigations into the record breaking narcotics shipment, which was traced to a storage facility in Girraween, Australia, in April this year.

“This breakthrough arrest underscores our commitment to working with international partners to dismantle transnational drug trafficking networks and bring those responsible to justice.”

Authorities say the development represents a significant milestone in identifying individuals allegedly responsible for moving and diverting one of the largest methamphetamine consignments connected to Ghana in recent years.

NACOC believe the suspect is linked to a sophisticated criminal network operating across multiple jurisdictions, with further arrests expected as investigations continue in partnership with international law enforcement agencies.

“This arrest marks a pivotal moment in a coordinated international effort to dismantle the sophisticated transnational syndicate. This development is a critical step in our ongoing mission to disrupt high-level narcotics trafficking,”

Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC)

First Arrest in High-Profile International Investigation

According to the Commission, the arrest is the first to emerge from a comprehensive investigation jointly undertaken by NACOC and the National Investigations Bureau following the discovery of the 320-kilogram methamphetamine shipment in Australia.

They explained that intelligence gathered during the investigation enabled law enforcement agencies to identify and apprehend a suspect believed to have played a significant role in the movement of the illicit consignment.

While the identity of the suspect has not been disclosed, the Commission indicated that the arrest has generated valuable intelligence that could assist investigators in identifying additional members of the criminal organisation.

The Commission noted that the operation demonstrates the effectiveness of sustained intelligence gathering and close cooperation between domestic and international security agencies in combating organised drug trafficking.

Shipment Traced to Australia

NACOC disclosed that the methamphetamine shipment, estimated to have a street value of US$296 million, was traced to a storage facility in Girraween, Australia, during investigations conducted in April 2026.

The seizure attracted international attention because of its scale and the complexity of the criminal network believed to have facilitated its movement across national borders.

NACOC said evidence gathered during the investigation pointed to the existence of a well-organised syndicate operating across multiple countries, prompting closer collaboration between Ghanaian investigators and foreign law enforcement partners.

Officials believe the latest arrest will significantly strengthen ongoing investigations into the wider network responsible for coordinating the shipment.

International Collaboration Intensifies

NACOC said investigators are continuing to work closely with international counterparts to locate and arrest other suspects believed to be connected to the operation.

According to the Commission, the investigation has expanded beyond Ghana’s borders and now involves coordinated intelligence-sharing and operational support among several jurisdictions.

“NACOC investigators are currently working alongside international partners to track down remaining suspects believed to be part of a wider, multi-jurisdictional network.”

Its further explained that transnational drug trafficking has become increasingly sophisticated, requiring stronger partnerships between national law enforcement agencies to identify criminal networks, trace financial flows and dismantle international supply chains.

The Commission added that cooperation with foreign agencies remains central to disrupting organised narcotics trafficking and preventing illicit drugs from entering international markets.

Arrest Provides Critical Intelligence

NACOC described the arrest as more than an isolated law enforcement success, indicating that the suspect is expected to provide information capable of advancing the broader investigation.

According to the Commission, intelligence obtained from the suspect may assist investigators in identifying additional collaborators, understanding the operational structure of the syndicate and uncovering other criminal activities linked to the network.

“The arrest provides vital intelligence as we work to identify and apprehend additional members of this global criminal network,”

Investigators are expected to analyse evidence gathered during the operation alongside information received from international partners as efforts continue to map the full extent of the organisation’s activities.

Renewed Commitment to Combating Drug Trafficking

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying intelligence-led operations aimed at disrupting large-scale narcotics trafficking organisations operating within and beyond Ghana.

NACOC stated that protecting Ghana and the wider West African sub-region from the activities of international drug syndicates remains one of its strategic priorities.

The Commission also reiterated its determination to strengthen collaboration with regional and international partners to improve intelligence-sharing, enhance operational coordination and prosecute individuals involved in cross-border narcotics crimes.

The Commission noted that the fight against organised drug trafficking requires sustained cooperation among governments, security institutions and international agencies, given the increasingly global nature of illicit drug networks.

Further Arrests Expected

As investigations continue, NACOC indicated that additional arrests are anticipated in the coming weeks as intelligence-led operations expand across multiple jurisdictions.

The Commission expressed confidence that continued collaboration with international partners will enable investigators to dismantle the wider criminal organisation and bring all individuals connected to the methamphetamine shipment to justice.

Law enforcement authorities have not ruled out further operations both within Ghana and abroad as evidence continues to emerge from the ongoing investigation.

This breakthrough underscores Ghana’s growing role in international efforts to combat organised narcotics trafficking and demonstrates the country’s commitment to working with global partners to disrupt sophisticated criminal enterprises that threaten public safety and regional security.

With investigations still underway, NACOC has assured the public that it remains focused on identifying every individual involved in the record-breaking methamphetamine operation while strengthening measures to prevent Ghana from being used as a transit or operational hub for international drug trafficking syndicates.
