Honourable Mubarak Mohammed Mutaka, Minister of Interior

Honourable Mubarak Mohammed Mutaka, Minister of Interior

The Minister for the Interior, Honourable Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has urged residents of Accra to remain indoors and work remotely following severe overnight rainfall that triggered widespread flooding across the capital. The Minister stated that the worsening weather conditions pose significant risks to commuters and residents.

Addressing the scale of the disruption, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak indicated that forecasts from the Ghana Meteorological Agency point to heavier rainfall later in the day. He explained that additional rainfall moving from Togo could intensify the flooding situation.

“Based on what the meteorological department is telling us, we expect it to be heavier if the rains from Togo arrive, so please stay home and work from home.”

An important dimension of the advisory focused on worker safety. The Interior Minister advised individuals already at their workplaces to remain there until weather conditions improve.

Additionally, he urged those yet to leave home to avoid unnecessary movement. He noted that limiting travel would reduce exposure to flooded roads and traffic related hazards.

He also shifted to employers across both public and private institutions. Honourable Mohammed-Mubarak called for flexible work arrangements to ensure business continuity while safeguarding lives.

Moreover, he encouraged organisations to adopt remote working systems where possible. He stated that digital platforms can help maintain productivity during the disruption.

He also stressed on non-essential meetings and engagements. The Minister suggested that activities requiring physical presence be moved online or rescheduled.

“Meetings that are not urgent can be held on Zoom, and those that require physical presence can be postponed.”

The emphasis, he stressed, remains on public safety as authorities continue monitoring the weather. The Minister ultimately appealed for calm and cooperation as emergency response efforts intensify across the city.

Emergency Agencies Intensify Response Amid Flooding Crisis

Emergency response agencies have heightened coordination efforts as flooding leaves major roads submerged and traffic congestion worsening across parts of Accra. Authorities say inter agency collaboration remains critical to protecting lives and property.

Discussing ongoing rescue operations, Honourable Mohammed-Mubarak commended frontline personnel for their swift response to affected communities. He acknowledged the efforts of the National Disaster Management Organisation, the Ghana Navy, the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service.

Furthermore, he praised emergency teams already deployed to flood prone areas. Their interventions, he noted, have helped reduce immediate danger in several communities.

Against this backdrop, the Interior Minister called for seamless communication among all emergency institutions. He stressed that every distress call should trigger a coordinated response without delays.

A key aspect of the response strategy involves eliminating operational silos between agencies. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak said institutions must function as a unified emergency system during crises.

“I want all emergency teams to stay connected. If a call comes to one agency, let us operationalise as one unit.”

Similarly, he urged responders to prioritise information sharing during rescue operations. Faster coordination, he noted, improves emergency deployment and reduces response time.

The focus remains on preventing avoidable casualties as heavy rainfall persists. Authorities continue to monitor flood levels while assessing vulnerable zones across the capital.

In light of the situation, residents have been encouraged to stay alert and follow official advisories. The Minister finally reiterated that collective action and disciplined public cooperation will remain essential throughout the emergency.
