Professor Christian Agyare has been installed as the 13th Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in an investiture ceremony held today that drew together traditional, religious, political and academic leaders from across the country.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, alongside Chief of Staff Dr Julius Debrah, joined academics and dignitaries at the ceremony to witness the formal installation of Prof. Agyare, whose appointment marks a significant leadership transition for one of Ghana’s premier science and technology institutions.

Prof. Agyare’s appointment was formally approved by the Governing Council of KNUST at its 292nd Special Meeting held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, where he was confirmed as Vice-Chancellor for a four-year term of office running from August 1, 2026 to July 31, 2030.

Today’s investiture ceremony represents the formal, public installation of that decision, bringing Prof. Agyare’s appointment into effect as he assumes leadership of the university before an audience that included some of Ghana’s most prominent traditional and political figures, underscoring the significance the country attaches to leadership transitions at its major public universities.

Prof. Agyare succeeds Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, whose tenure as Vice-Chancellor officially concluded on July 31, 2026. His installation makes him the 13th Vice-Chancellor to lead KNUST since the university’s establishment on October 6, 1951, placing him within a long lineage of academic leaders who have shaped the institution’s growth over more than seven decades.

“Leadership in higher education is measured not only by academic excellence but by the ability to inspire innovation, uphold integrity, and create opportunities that transform lives.” Knust

Career Built on Decades of Service to KNUST

A distinguished academic and globally recognised researcher, Prof. Agyare brings more than two and a half decades of dedicated service to KNUST and the wider international academic community to his new role.

He is widely respected for his transformational leadership style, strategic vision and substantial contributions to pharmaceutical sciences and higher education management, qualities that have shaped his rise through the university’s leadership ranks.

Prior to his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Agyare served as Provost of the College of Health Sciences, KNUST’s largest and most complex academic college, a role that gave him direct experience managing one of the university’s most demanding administrative and academic portfolios.

Academic Journey Spanning Continents

Prof. Agyare’s academic path began at KNUST, where he obtained his Bachelor of Pharmacy and Master of Pharmacy degrees, before he went on to earn a Doctor rerum naturalium (Dr. rer. nat.) degree from the University of Münster in Germany. He subsequently held postdoctoral and research appointments with Novartis and Seeding Labs in Boston, as well as at the University of California, San Francisco, where his work focused on cutting-edge discovery in parasitic diseases and advanced pharmaceutical research.

These international postings shaped his global outlook and embedded him within influential scientific and academic networks spanning multiple continents, experience that university stakeholders point to as central to the strategic vision he now brings to KNUST’s leadership.

His scholarly output has earned him recognition among top scientists globally and placed him among the top 100 researchers in Ghana in the AD Scientific Index 2026 rankings.

His research spans natural products pharmacology, antimicrobial resistance, wound healing, ethnopharmacology, parapsychology and anticancer drug discovery, areas of study with direct relevance to healthcare delivery and scientific advancement across Africa and beyond.

Millions Secured in Global Research Funding

Over the course of his career, Prof. Agyare has secured more than USD 11 million in competitive research grants and funding support from internationally respected organisations, including the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Mastercard Foundation and the World Bank.

His global academic standing is further reflected in his election as the first African member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research, alongside his membership on the editorial boards of more than thirty international journals. He also holds fellowships with both the Ghana College of Pharmacists and the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana.

Beyond his academic and research achievements, Prof. Agyare has held several strategic leadership positions within KNUST’s governance structures, having served on the University Executive Committee, Academic Board, Planning and Resources Committee, Budgetary Committee, and the Appointments and Promotions Committee, positioning him with deep institutional knowledge as he now takes on the university’s highest administrative office.

With today’s investiture formally installing him in office, Prof. Agyare now assumes responsibility for steering KNUST through the next four years, bringing with him a combination of scientific distinction, international research experience and extensive institutional leadership.

His tenure, running through July 2030, will be closely watched by stakeholders across Ghana’s higher education and scientific research communities as he takes the helm of one of the country’s most influential universities.
