Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has pledged to establish an educational support fund, to be named the “Sunset Fund,” aimed at providing opportunities for underprivileged children across the country, a commitment he announced during a courtesy call on the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Nuhu Sharubutu.

The visit formed part of efforts to strengthen the long-standing relationship between Parliament and the revered Islamic leader, with the Speaker using the occasion to recognise the Chief Imam’s sustained contribution to promoting peace, national unity and social cohesion within Ghana and beyond.

Announcing his intention to establish the Sunset Fund, Rt. Hon. Bagbin framed the initiative as a deliberate effort to extend educational opportunity to children who might otherwise be locked out of it due to financial hardship.

Although the Speaker did not go into extensive detail on the fund’s operational structure during the courtesy call, the naming itself, evoking a season of reflection and legacy, suggested an initiative intended to leave a lasting mark on Ghana’s approach to supporting vulnerable children.

The choice to unveil the fund during a visit to the National Chief Imam appeared deliberate, tying the initiative symbolically to themes of compassion, communal responsibility and social welfare that resonate strongly within both the religious and political spheres the Speaker sought to bridge through the visit.

Rt. Hon. Bagbin used much of his remarks to express deep appreciation for the Chief Imam’s decades-long commitment to fostering peace and national unity, describing his continuous prayers and steady moral guidance as a source of strength for the country’s democratic institutions.

” I am commitment to peace and harmony is an inspiration to religious communities across the world.”

The Speaker’s remarks reflected a broader recognition of the Chief Imam’s role not merely as a religious figurehead, but as a stabilising influence whose interventions have often helped ease tensions during periods of national uncertainty, reinforcing why Parliament continues to place such symbolic and practical value on maintaining close ties with his office.

Bond Between Parliament and Religious Leadership

Beyond the specific announcement of the Sunset Fund, the courtesy call carried broader significance as an affirmation of the working relationship between Ghana’s legislative arm and the country’s religious leadership. Rt. Hon. Bagbin’s visit underscored a recognition that sustainable peace and social cohesion require sustained engagement between state institutions and the moral authorities that command public trust across religious lines.

By personally visiting the Chief Imam rather than sending a delegation, the Speaker signalled the weight Parliament continues to attach to this relationship, treating the National Chief Imam’s counsel and blessing as integral to the smooth functioning of the country’s democratic processes.

A Pledge Rooted in Educational Access

The Sunset Fund’s specific focus on educational support for underprivileged children places it within a broader tradition of philanthropic initiatives launched by senior state officials aimed at addressing gaps in access to quality education for Ghana’s most vulnerable populations. Given the scale of financial barriers that continue to keep many children out of school or unable to progress beyond basic education, the fund, if fully realised, could represent a meaningful addition to existing government and civil society efforts to close these gaps.

While details on funding sources, governance structure and implementation timelines were not disclosed during the courtesy call, the announcement itself signals an intention on the part of the Speaker to leave behind a tangible legacy tied to educational access, distinct from his formal legislative responsibilities.

A Gesture of Gratitude and Continuity

Throughout the visit, Rt. Hon. Bagbin repeatedly returned to themes of gratitude and continuity, thanking the Chief Imam for prayers that have, in his view, helped guide the nation through difficult periods, and expressing hope that this spiritual support would continue as Parliament navigates ongoing legislative and political challenges.

His remarks suggested a Speaker keenly aware of the symbolic power such visits carry, using the occasion not only to make a policy announcement but also to reaffirm the value Parliament places on the moral and spiritual guidance offered by religious leaders like the Chief Imam.

A Fund Yet to Take Formal Shape

As with many such announcements made during ceremonial engagements, the Sunset Fund remains, for now, a stated intention rather than a fully operational initiative. Questions remain over how the fund will be financed, which children or communities will be prioritised for support, and what timeline the Speaker envisions for its formal establishment and rollout.

Nonetheless, the announcement adds to a growing list of philanthropic and welfare-oriented commitments made by senior Ghanaian political figures in recent months, reflecting a broader trend of leaders using symbolic public engagements to signal personal commitments to social welfare beyond their official legislative duties.

With the Sunset Fund now publicly announced, attention will likely turn to how quickly Rt. Hon. Bagbin moves to formalise its structure and begin mobilising resources to support underprivileged children.

Given the significance of the setting in which the pledge was made, stakeholders in both the education and religious sectors may look for further details on how the fund intends to translate this symbolic gesture into concrete support for the children it aims to serve.
