Afropop star Wendy Shay has been crowned Artiste of the Year at the 7th Ghana Music Awards USA, at the Hyatt Regency Princeton in New Jersey. The prestigious recognition marks her first victory in the history of the diaspora awards scheme and highlights her rising status as one of Ghana’s leading female music exports.

Shay, born Wendy Asiamah Addo on February 20, 1996, in Accra, announced the win with evident pride. In a post shared shortly after the ceremony, she wrote: “SHAYGANG we won the Artiste of the Year at the GMAUSA. Thank you GMAUSA. Thank you New Jersey.”

In a follow-up statement, Shay revealed she was unable to collect the award on stage due to an unforeseen circumstance. She reassured fans she was fine and expressed gratitude, noting that “God knows best.” The absence did little to diminish the significance of the achievement for the singer and her dedicated fanbase, known as Shaygang.

The Ghana Music Awards USA, now in its seventh edition, celebrates Ghanaian music and culture while bridging the homeland with the diaspora. This year’s event carried a FIFA World Cup theme under the banner “Celebrating Our Culture, Music and Our Stars.”

It drew Ghanaian artists, industry figures, and community members from across the United States and beyond to the Princeton venue. Categories span both Ghana-based talent and US-based Ghanaian musicians, highlighting the global reach of the country’s vibrant music scene.

Shay’s win stands out against a competitive field. Among Ghana-based artists, Piesie Esther and Shatta Wale led with two awards each, while others including Medikal, Beeztrap KOTM, Kwabena Kwabena, and Obaapa Christy also claimed honours. Shay herself secured one major prize in the top category, cementing a strong showing after entering with multiple nominations.

The Artiste of the Year title arrives at a pivotal moment in Shay’s career. After training and working as a midwife and nurse in Germany where she relocated as a child following her father’s death-she returned to Ghana in 2018 to pursue music full-time. Signed to RuffTown Records under manager Bullet in the wake of Ebony Reigns’ passing, she debuted with the hit “Uber Driver.” Early comparisons to the late star brought intense scrutiny and online criticism, yet Shay persisted with a string of releases that blended Afrobeats, Afropop, highlife, and personal storytelling.

Over the years she has released albums and EPs including Shay On You and more recent projects, scoring hits such as “Bedroom Commando,” “Stevie Wonder” (with Shatta Wale), “Survivor,” “Crazy Love” (featuring OliveTheBoy), and “Too Late.” She has become one of the most streamed Ghanaian female artists on platforms like Boomplay and has expanded her influence beyond music through the Shay Foundation, which focuses on child welfare and healthcare, as well as cultural recognition including her enstoolment as Queen Ewurabena Ofosuhemaa Shay I in Gomoa Afransi.

In May 2026, at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards in Accra, Shay won Best Afrobeats/Afropop Artist but fell short of the overall Artiste of the Year title, which went to Black Sherif.

Earlier in 2026 she also claimed Best Female Artiste in West Africa at the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), beating established names including Tiwa Savage, Ayra Starr, Moliy, and Amaarae. The GMAUSA victory adds an important international diaspora honour to that growing list and reinforces her consistency after years of building her brand independently in a competitive industry.

Industry observers note that Shay’s trajectory reflects broader shifts in Ghanaian music: greater female visibility, the power of diaspora platforms, and artists who successfully navigate both local charts and global streaming audiences.

Her ability to connect with listeners through resilient, danceable, and emotionally direct songs has helped expand the reach of Ghanaian sounds in the United States, where large Ghanaian communities sustain demand for live performances and cultural events.

The awards night itself featured red-carpet glamour, performances, and recognition across dozens of categories. Media partners such as WatsUp TV provided coverage, helping beam the celebration back to audiences in Ghana and across Africa.

For many in the diaspora, events like GMAUSA serve as both entertainment and cultural affirmation, offering a stage where Ghanaian excellence is celebrated far from home.

Shay’s latest accolade is expected to boost her profile further as she continues releasing music and engaging fans. Supporters have framed the win as validation after years of hard work, online challenges, and steady output.

In an industry often dominated by male voices in top categories, her success carries extra weight for aspiring female artists.

It affirms her place among Ghana’s most prominent contemporary voices and highlights the enduring global appetite for the country’s dynamic musical talent. With the award now secured, attention turns to what the versatile singer will deliver next-both on record and on stages at home and abroad.
