The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Enterprises Agency, Ms. Margaret Ansei, present at the official launch of the E-Visa Portal , a landmark digital initiative described as a significant milestone under the Government of Ghana’s digitalization agenda to boost trade, tourism and AfCFTA.

The launch, held in Accra, brought together government officials, private sector leaders, diplomatic representatives, and business associations. It marks a major shift in how Ghana processes entry for travellers, investors, and business partners seeking to engage with the country.

The E-Visa Portal is designed to simplify entry processes for both short term visitors and long term investors. By moving applications, approvals, and payments online, the system is expected to reduce administrative bottlenecks, cut waiting times, and improve Ghana’s image as an open and efficient destination for trade, tourism, and enterprise.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Ansei said the portal aligns directly with efforts to build a more competitive and inclusive business environment for Ghanaian enterprises, particularly Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that rely on regional and international partnerships.

“This initiative simplifies entry processes for travellers and investors, when we reduce administrative bottlenecks, we make it easier for people to do business here. It positions Ghana as a more accessible destination for trade, tourism and enterprise, and that is good news for the thousands of businesses we support at GEA.”

Ms. Ansei

A Digital Leap Under Ghana’s Transformation Agenda

The E-Visa Portal is one of several flagship projects under the Government’s broader digitalization drive. Over the last five years, Ghana has rolled out digital systems in areas such as tax administration, business registration, public procurement, and financial services. The goal is to leverage technology to improve service delivery, increase transparency, and reduce the cost of doing business.

Officials at the launch said the new visa system will allow applicants from across the world to apply for entry permits online, upload supporting documents, make payments, and receive approvals without having to visit a Ghanaian embassy or consulate in person.

The platform also integrates with other government databases to enhance security and verification. For the business community, the impact is expected to be immediate. Investors scouting for opportunities, technical partners attending conferences, and traders participating in exhibitions will now be able to secure travel clearance faster. This is particularly important as Ghana seeks to attract more foreign direct investment into priority sectors such as agro-processing, manufacturing, digital services, and creative industries.

Supporting AfCFTA and Regional Mobility

Beyond attracting global investors, the E-Visa Portal also reflects Ghana’s continued commitment to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) vision. Ghana is host to the AfCFTA Secretariat in Accra, and government officials have repeatedly stated the ease of movement for people, goods, and services, is critical to making the continental trade agreement work. The portal advances mobility and integration across the continent by making it easier for African entrepreneurs, traders, and professionals to enter Ghana for business purposes. Under AfCFTA, businesses are expected to expand across borders, set up supply chains, and access new markets. Efficient visa processing is seen as a key enabler.

Ms. Ansei emphasizes that MSMEs stand to benefit most from improved mobility. Many Ghanaian small businesses already trade with partners in Nigeria, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, and other ECOWAS countries. A faster visa process will allow them to attend trade fairs, meet buyers, and seal deals without the delays that have historically slowed cross border commerce.

“As Ghana strengthens its digital infrastructure, GEA remains committed to supporting a business environment that is efficient, transparent and globally connected, our enterprises cannot compete globally if the systems around them are slow and paper-based.’’

Ms. Ansei

GEA’s Role in a Competitive Enterprise Ecosystem

The Ghana Enterprises Agency is the government body mandated to develop and promote MSMEs. With over 80% of businesses in Ghana falling within the MSME category. GEA’s work touches a large portion of the economy, from market traders and artisans to tech start-ups and agro-processors. GEA recognizes the value of efficient, technology driven public services in building a competitive enterprise ecosystem. The Agency has itself been digitizing several of its own services, including business advisory support, access to finance facilitation, and training programs.

Ms. Ansei said GEA will work to sensitize its clients and partners across the 16 regions on how to leverage the E-Visa Portal, especially those in tourism, hospitality, and export-oriented sectors who regularly host international guests and partners.

The Agency also plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and the Ghana Tourism Authority to ensure that the new system supports tourism growth. Ghana’s tourism sector has rebounded strongly in recent years, with initiatives like the “Year of Return” and “Beyond the Return” drawing significant international attention.

Government officials at the launch outlined several key features of the E-Visa Portal: Online Application: Applicants can complete forms, upload documents, and pay fees from anywhere in the world. Faster Processing: Standard processing times are expected to be significantly shorter than the previous manual system. Transparency: Applicants can track the status of their application in real time. Integration: The portal links with immigration, security, and revenue systems to ensure compliance and safety.

The government has also committed to regular monitoring and feedback to ensure the platform remains user-friendly and responsive to the needs of travellers and businesses. Looking Ahead The launch of the E-Visa Portal comes at a time when Ghana is actively positioning itself as a hub for trade and investment in West Africa. With the AfCFTA Secretariat based in Accra and major infrastructure projects underway, policymakers believe digital tools will be essential to sustaining momentum.

For GEA, the focus now turns to ensuring that Ghanaian businesses are ready to take advantage of the opportunities created by easier access. That includes training on digital tools, support for export readiness, and linkages to international markets.
