Cedi Cuts 2026 Losses by More Than Half

The Ghanaian cedi has staged a remarkable recovery against the United States dollar, dramatically cutting its year-to-date depreciation and reigniting optimism about the stability of the local currency.

Fresh market data show that the cedi’s year-to-date loss has narrowed to 4.09%, a major improvement from the 10.4% depreciation recorded at the end of July 2026.

The sharp turnaround represents one of its notable developments in Ghana’s foreign exchange market in recent months, particularly after the currency came under significant pressure during the first half of the year.

The latest gains have also strengthened the cedi’s performance on both weekly and monthly measures, raising expectations that the recovery could continue if current market conditions persist.

Cedi’s Stunning Turnaround

The cedi continued its positive run during the week of August 10 to 11, extending gains that have steadily changed the outlook for the currency.

For much of the first half of 2026, the local currency faced intense pressure as demand for the US dollar increased. The resulting depreciation raised concerns about imported inflation, business costs and the broader stability of Ghana’s foreign exchange market.

However, recent developments have significantly altered that picture.

The reduction in year-to-date depreciation from 10.4% at the end of July to 4.09% in August means the cedi has recovered a substantial portion of the ground it lost earlier in the year.

The performance is particularly significant because currency stability remains critical to Ghana’s economic outlook. A stronger cedi can reduce the local currency cost of imported goods, ease pressure on businesses that rely on imported inputs and potentially support further moderation in inflation.

BoG Intervention Boosts Market Confidence

One of the major factors supporting the cedi’s recovery has been stronger foreign exchange intermediation and market support from the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

The central bank has continued to deploy measures aimed at improving conditions in the foreign exchange market, while its broader Foreign Exchange Management Framework has provided additional support for orderly market conditions.

Market participants have increasingly pointed to improved liquidity and reduced demand pressures as key reasons behind the cedi’s recent performance.

The developments suggest that the intense imbalance between demand for dollars and the availability of foreign exchange has eased considerably.

For businesses and investors, this could be an important signal. Sustained stability in the currency can improve confidence when companies are making investment decisions, pricing products or planning international transactions.

Export Inflows Give Cedi Another Boost

The cedi’s recovery has not been driven by central bank measures alone.

Foreign exchange inflows from Ghana’s extractive sector have also provided important support to the local currency.

Ghana’s gold and other extractive activities remain major sources of foreign exchange, making export receipts an important component of the country’s external position.

Higher foreign exchange inflows can increase dollar supply in the domestic market, helping to reduce pressure on the cedi when demand for the US currency rises.

The latest improvement has therefore been supported by a combination of stronger supply conditions and easing demand pressures.

This combination could prove crucial in determining whether the cedi’s recovery becomes a temporary rally or develops into a more sustained trend.

Offshore Investors Return to Local Bonds

Another factor contributing to the cedi’s improved performance is renewed demand from offshore investors for Ghana’s local currency-denominated bonds.

Foreign investor participation in the domestic debt market can generate additional foreign exchange inflows as investors convert funds into cedis to purchase local assets.

The increased interest in Ghana’s local bonds therefore has implications beyond the debt market. It can also strengthen demand for the local currency and provide additional support to the foreign exchange market.

For investors watching Ghana’s economic recovery, the renewed interest could signal growing confidence in the country’s macroeconomic direction.

Dollar Demand Loses Some Steam

Perhaps one of the most important developments behind the cedi’s recent gains is the easing of demand pressures.

During periods of intense dollar demand, importers, businesses, investors and individuals compete for limited foreign exchange, creating significant pressure on the local currency.

The current environment appears different.

With foreign exchange inflows improving and demand pressures easing, the market has become more supportive of the cedi.

This has allowed the currency to build momentum and significantly reduce its accumulated losses.

Can the Cedi Sustain the Recovery?

The biggest question now is whether the cedi can maintain its momentum in the coming weeks.

Current market data and information from the Bank of Ghana provide grounds for cautious optimism. Stronger foreign exchange intermediation, extractive sector inflows, offshore investor demand and reduced dollar pressures could continue supporting the currency.

However, the outlook will still depend heavily on developments in global currency markets, domestic demand for foreign exchange and the strength of Ghana’s external inflows.

A sustained improvement would represent a major boost for businesses, investors and households that have faced uncertainty from currency volatility.

All in all, the cedi has delivered a powerful reversal. With its year-to-date depreciation falling from 10.4% at the end of July to 4.09%, the local currency has cut its 2026 losses by more than half.

The latest rally has therefore transformed the narrative around the cedi, moving the currency from a period of heavy pressure toward renewed strength and stability.
