MTV Video Music Awards

British rapper Dave and Nigerian singer Tems have received a major international recognition as their collaboration “Raindance” earned a nomination for Best R&B at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.

The nominees were announced on August 18, placing the track alongside works by Bruno Mars, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Kehlani, and Mariah the Scientist with Kali Uchis in one of the ceremony’s competitive categories.

“Raindance” first appeared on October 24, 2025, as the fifth track on Dave’s third studio album, The Boy Who Played the Harp. The song quickly grew into a commercial and cultural standout. It climbed to number one on the UK Official Singles Chart in late January 2026, marking Dave’s fourth chart-topping single and Tems’ first.

The track also performed strongly across international charts, reaching the top 10 in several countries and securing a place on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The collaboration blends Dave’s introspective lyricism with Tems’ distinctive, soulful delivery over a smooth, genre-fluid production that incorporates elements of Afroswing and contemporary R&B. Producer and longtime Dave collaborator Kyle Evans has described the studio sessions in West London as relaxed and organic. Tems arrived with a core melodic idea, the repeated “I love you” refrain that became the song’s emotional anchor.

Dave built verses around it, and the pair refined the lyrics and atmosphere together. Additional production contributions from Jo Caleb, Jonny Leslie, Jim Legxacy and others helped shape the final version into a polished yet intimate record.

The official music video, directed by Nathan James Tettey and filmed in Lagos, Nigeria, further amplified the song’s reach. Intimate scenes between the two artists generated significant online discussion and helped sustain momentum through social media, including a popular TikTok dance challenge.

The visual’s chemistry and Lagos setting reinforced the track’s cross-continental appeal, connecting UK and Nigerian audiences while resonating more broadly.

For Dave, whose previous albums Psychodrama and We’re All Alone In This Together both debuted at number one in the UK, “Raindance” represents another successful chapter in an already acclaimed career. The London-born artist, known for thoughtful storytelling and sharp social observation, has repeatedly drawn on his Nigerian heritage through collaborations with artists such as Burna Boy, Wizkid and Boj. Pairing with Tems continues that thread while expanding his global footprint.

Tems, already a major force in contemporary African music and a previous collaborator with high-profile international acts, brought her signature blend of vulnerability and strength to the record. Her contribution has been widely praised for elevating the song’s emotional core and broadening its sonic palette.

The nomination adds to her growing list of global accolades and underscores her ability to thrive in collaborative settings without losing her distinctive artistic identity.

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will take place on September 27 in Los Angeles and air live on CBS, with a simulcast on MTV and Paramount+. Madonna leads the overall nominations with 11, followed by Taylor Swift with nine.

Fan voting is currently open for most categories through September 25. While “Raindance” is competing in a stacked Best R&B field that includes established pop and R&B heavyweights, its presence highlights the increasing visibility of UK and African artists on major American award stages.

Public Reaction

Industry observers note that the nomination arrives at a moment when genre boundaries continue to blur. “Raindance” does not sit neatly in traditional R&B, hip-hop or Afrobeats categories, yet its emotional directness and sophisticated production have earned it recognition in an R&B context.

This flexibility mirrors broader trends in global music consumption, where listeners and award voters increasingly reward cross-cultural collaborations that feel authentic rather than calculated.

The song’s success also reflects careful rollout strategy. After its album appearance, it was serviced to radio and supported by the Lagos video, allowing organic growth rather than relying solely on immediate promotional pushes. Its slow-burn rise to the top of the UK chart and sustained international performance demonstrated lasting audience connection.

As the VMAs approach, “Raindance” stands as more than a nomination entry. It represents a meeting point between two distinct yet complementary artists, one a critically revered British storyteller, the other a Nigerian vocalist whose voice has become one of the most recognizable in contemporary music.

Fans of both artists will be watching closely on September 27. In the meantime, the nomination itself serves as further validation of a song that began in a West London studio and has since traveled far beyond its origins, carrying the combined strengths of Dave and Tems to new audiences worldwide.
