Onga Jollof Battle, West African Edition

Accra is set to host a vibrant culinary showdown this Saturday as five West African nations compete for supremacy in the highly anticipated Onga Jollof Battle West African Edition 2. The event, organised by seasoning brand Onga under Promasidor Ghana, takes place on 22 August 2026 at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, starting at 10am.

The competition brings together chefs representing Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone. They will prepare their distinctive versions of jollof rice, the iconic one-pot dish that unites the region even as friendly rivalries over the “best” recipe continue to spark lively debate across social media and dinner tables.

This year’s edition builds on the success of the previous West African contest held in Accra in 2025, when Nigeria emerged victorious, Ghana took second place and Senegal finished third. That event, which formed part of the broader Onga Jollof Battle series marking World Jollof Day on 22 August, featured live cook-offs, public tasting zones and lively entertainment that turned the gathering into both a competition and a cultural celebration.

Ghana’s hopes this year rest with Gina Abbam-Baidoo of Gigi’s Kitchen. She earned the national slot after winning a competitive selection process that featured ten finalists showcasing their skills and creativity with jollof. Organisers and food enthusiasts view her as a strong contender known for consistency, creativity and a deep commitment to authentic Ghanaian flavours. At the regional battle she will compete for the title and a grand prize of $5,000.

Jollof rice itself carries layers of history and identity. Variations exist across West Africa: some versions emphasise a smoky base, others prioritise tomato intensity, spice balance or specific proteins and vegetables. The dish has become a powerful symbol of cultural pride. Debates between Ghana and Nigeria in particular have long animated online conversations and real-world gatherings, yet events like the Onga Jollof Battle transform that rivalry into shared celebration.

Previous editions have highlighted how different national twists on the same beloved recipe can coexist while still producing clear winners judged on taste, presentation, aroma and technique.

Onga, Ghana’s popular seasoning brand, has positioned the competition as more than a cook-off. Company representatives have repeatedly described the brand as “Africa’s helping hand in every kitchen,” using the platform to promote quality ingredients while celebrating regional food heritage.

Past events featured live music, DJ sets, free tasting opportunities and an atmosphere that mixed serious culinary focus with festive energy. Organisers expect a similar mix this year at the beachfront La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, a venue known for hosting large gatherings and offering ample space for both competitors and spectators.0

The timing aligns deliberately with World Jollof Day, observed annually on 22 August. The date has grown into a regional moment for recognising the dish’s cultural importance and the communities that prepare it.

By expanding the format beyond bilateral Ghana-Nigeria matchups into a multi-nation West African edition, Onga has broadened participation and given smaller culinary voices a stage alongside the better-known rivals.

Anticipation is high in Accra in the days leading up to the event. Food lovers, diaspora visitors and local residents are expected to fill the venue, many eager to sample the competing dishes and cheer for their national representatives.

Public Reaction

Social media has already begun circulating the official poster showing a steaming black pot of colourful jollof over open flames, flanked by the flags of the five participating countries. The imagery captures both the drama of the contest and the everyday warmth associated with the dish.

Judges will evaluate the plates according to established criteria that typically include flavour balance, visual appeal, texture and overall execution under timed conditions. In previous years the cook-off portion lasted roughly two-and-a-half hours, after which tasting sessions allowed guests to form their own opinions.

Entertainment has historically included performances that kept energy high between rounds of cooking and scoring.

For the chefs involved, the stakes extend beyond prize money. Victory brings bragging rights that travel far beyond the hotel grounds, reinforcing national culinary identity in a region where food remains a central expression of culture and hospitality.

Defeat, meanwhile, rarely ends the conversation; it simply fuels the next round of friendly arguments and the following year’s preparations.

Beyond the competitive element, the Onga Jollof Battle underscores the growing professionalisation of African culinary talent. Platforms that spotlight individual chefs help elevate local food traditions, inspire younger cooks and encourage innovation while remaining rooted in authenticity.

Abbam-Baidoo’s path from national finalist to regional representative illustrates how such contests can create visible pathways for skilled practitioners.

As Accra prepares to welcome the competing teams, the focus remains on the shared pleasure of a well-cooked pot of jollof. Whether the eventual winner hails from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast or Sierra Leone, the real lasting impression is likely to be the gathering itself: five nations cooking side by side, audiences tasting across borders, and a region affirming that its most famous dish continues to bring people together even when they argue about how best to prepare it.

The event begins at 10am on Saturday, 22 August 2026, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra. Tickets and further details are being promoted through Onga Ghana’s official channels.

Food enthusiasts are advised to arrive early to secure good viewing spots and tasting opportunities.
