The Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed that it is investigating a disturbing report of an alleged sexual assault involving a student of Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School, allegedly perpetrated by two watchmen employed at the school.

Addressing the matter, GES Management said preliminary reports indicate that the student involved is a special needs student who is on medication, explaining that the alleged incident occurred on a day when the student reportedly suffered a relapse and required medical attention.

“The safety, dignity, and wellbeing of every student must remain our highest priority. Any conduct that places a student at risk cannot be tolerated, and where wrongdoing is established, appropriate action must follow in accordance with the law.”

As an initial response to the allegations, GES disclosed that the two watchmen implicated in the case have been arrested and handed over to the Police for further investigation. Management confirmed that both individuals have also been interdicted with immediate effect, pending the outcome of ongoing investigations into the matter.

This swift administrative action reflects the Service’s effort to remove the accused individuals from the school environment while investigations proceed, ensuring that the case is handled with appropriate urgency given the vulnerability of the student involved.

Investigations Ongoing, Sanctions to Follow Findings

GES stated that thorough investigations into the incident are currently underway, with Management indicating that appropriate sanctions would be applied based on the outcome of these investigations, in accordance with the GES Code of Conduct and the relevant laws of Ghana.

“Based on the outcome of the investigations, Management will apply the appropriate sanctions in accordance with the GES Code of Conduct and the laws of Ghana.”

This measured approach reflects the Service’s commitment to ensuring that any disciplinary or legal action taken follows due process, rather than acting solely on preliminary reports before a full investigation has been concluded.

Caution to Staff On Professional Conduct

Management used the opportunity to caution all staff within the Service to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, stressing the importance of protecting the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of every student under their care.

GES was firm in stating that the Service will not tolerate any conduct that compromises the safety and wellbeing of students, reinforcing a broader institutional stance against any behaviour that places students at risk within the school environment.

In its concluding remarks, GES sought to assure parents, guardians, and the general public that the matter is being treated with the seriousness it deserves, signalling the Service’s intent to ensure accountability throughout the investigative and disciplinary process.

 Broader Concern for Vulnerable Students

The case adds to broader public concern about the safety of vulnerable students within Ghana’s school system, particularly those with special needs who may require additional care and protection during medical emergencies or periods of heightened vulnerability.

The circumstances surrounding this particular incident, involving a student who reportedly required urgent medical attention at the time of the alleged assault, are likely to draw closer scrutiny of protocols surrounding the care and supervision of special needs students within boarding school settings.

With investigations ongoing and the accused individuals already in police custody, attention now turns to how swiftly the case progresses through the justice system.

As GES continues to gather facts surrounding the incident, the Service’s response is likely to be closely watched by parents, guardians, and education stakeholders concerned about broader safeguarding practices within the country’s senior high schools, particularly regarding the protection of students with special needs and other vulnerable groups.
