U.S. House Democrat, Debbie Dingell plans to introduce legislation seeking to overturn President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” escalating a political and symbolic dispute that has emerged alongside the growing trade tensions between the United States and Canada.
Dingell said that she would introduce the bill, titled the “Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act” as lawmakers return from their summer recess. The legislation would seek to nullify Trump’s order directing federal agencies to use “Lake America” on U.S. maps, government documents and databases.
The Democratic lawmaker, who represents Michigan, sharply criticised the name change, arguing that the lake is an important part of the shared geography and relationship between the United States and Canada. “People do not understand how intertwined our two countries are,” Dingell told a news agency, starting, “And this is insane, this naming Lake Ontario ‘Lake America.’”
Dingell has also gathered more than 100 signatures from fellow House Democrats on a letter urging Trump to reconsider his broader approach toward Canada and recognise the importance of the relationship between the two countries.
The proposed legislation comes days after Trump signed an executive order directing the federal government to adopt “Lake America” as the official name used by U.S. agencies. The order does not have the power to compel Canada to recognise the new name. Trump has presented the renaming as part of a series of symbolic changes involving geographic names.
Earlier this year, his administration adopted the name “Gulf of America” for the body of water internationally known as the Gulf of Mexico in U.S. federal usage. While signing the Lake Ontario order at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, Trump joked about potentially renaming other major bodies of water. “We have a gulf and we have a lake – now all we need is an ocean. Maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific,” he told reporters, adding, “Maybe we’ll change them both.”
The White House has framed the changes as an exercise of presidential authority over federal geographic naming, but the Lake Ontario dispute has taken on particular significance because of the lake’s location along the U.S.-Canada border.
Lake Ontario is shared by the two countries, with the international boundary running through the lake. It forms part of New York state’s northern border and lies directly across from Ontario, Canada’s most populous province. Toronto, Canada’s largest city, sits on its northern shore.
For Dingell, the dispute is also personal. She recalled growing up in St. Clair, Michigan, a community close to the Canadian border.
“I grew up in a small town called St Clair, and when I got up and looked out my bedroom window every day, I didn’t see America. I saw Canada. We lived that close. Canada was as close to us as [the Cannon House Office Building] is to the Capitol.”

The dispute has also triggered a public response from Canadian officials. Ontario Premier Doug Ford erected a large sign declaring, “Lake Ontario. Now and Always,” rejecting the U.S. administration’s preferred name. Trump responded by posting a video on social media showing himself removing an image of Ford’s sign and replacing it with one displaying “Lake America,” while dancing to the song “YMCA.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has firmly rejected Trump’s renaming effort, pointing to the longstanding history of the name Lake Ontario. Carney has said the name is derived from an Indigenous Wendat word and has been associated with the lake for more than four centuries.
U.S-Canada Ties Deteriorate Over Trade
The dispute comes as relations between Washington and Ottawa have deteriorated over trade. The United States has imposed a 50% tariff on Canadian steel, while Canada has responded with retaliatory tariffs of its own. Trump has repeatedly criticised Canada’s trade policies and has argued that the United States has suffered substantial trade losses in its relationship with its northern neighbour.
In a post on Truth Social made overnight, he claimed that the United States had been losing billions annually through its trade relationship with Canada “For many years, the USA has been losing more than 60 Billion Dollars a year with Canada. Why???” Trump wrote.
“Our long ago stolen businesses are now coming back to America in order to avoid paying tariffs. They are lining up, just like the rest of the World!!!”

Canadian officials, meanwhile, have defended their country’s economic interests and rejected Trump’s repeated suggestions that Canada could eventually become the 51st U.S. state.
For now, the Lake Ontario naming dispute remains largely symbolic, but it has become another visible point of friction between the two countries. Dingell’s proposed legislation is expected to provide lawmakers with an opportunity to debate the limits of presidential authority over geographic names while also highlighting the broader importance of U.S.-Canada relations.
