Banking Sector Hit by Profit Decline and Rising Impairment Costs

Banking Sector Hit by Profit Decline and Rising Impairment Costs

Ghana’s banking industry is facing a fresh profitability squeeze as earnings weakened sharply in the first half of 2026, with rising impairment costs and a slowdown in interest income putting pressure on the sector’s bottom line.

Data from the Bank of Ghana shows that the banking industry recorded a profit of GH¢7.1 billion at the end of June 2026, slightly below the GH¢7.2 billion recorded during the same period in 2025.

While the decline in absolute profit appears marginal, the underlying figures point to a significant reversal in the sector’s earnings momentum. Profit after tax contracted by 1.3% year-on-year in June 2026, compared with the strong 32.6% growth recorded in June 2025.

Profit Growth Takes a Sharp Turn

The latest performance marks a dramatic shift in the fortunes of Ghanaian banks.

In June 2025, banks were enjoying robust earnings expansion, supported by stronger income growth. Twelve months later, that momentum has faded, with profit before tax also declining by 1.5% year-on-year.

This compares with a 32.2% growth in profit before tax recorded during the corresponding period of 2025.

The slowdown suggests that banks are entering a more challenging profitability environment, particularly as the low interest rate regime begins to reshape their traditional income sources.

Interest Income Comes Under Pressure

One of the biggest warning signs is the performance of net interest income.

Net interest income contracted by 3.1% in June 2026, representing a major turnaround from the 20.2% growth recorded a year earlier.

According to the Bank of Ghana, the development reflected slower growth in interest income, largely attributable to the prevailing low interest rate environment during the review period.

The impact is significant because interest income remains a major source of revenue for banks. As interest rates decline, banks can face pressure on the returns generated from loans and other interest-bearing assets.

At the same time, competition for quality borrowers and changing market conditions can further squeeze margins.

Fees and Commissions Provide a Bright Spot

Despite the broader slowdown, banks found some relief from fees and commissions.

Income from fees and commissions grew by 18.2% in June 2026, slightly higher than the 17.8% growth recorded a year earlier.

The performance makes fees and commissions the standout income line in the banking sector during the review period.

However, the stronger performance was not enough to offset weaker growth across other major income sources.

The Bank of Ghana noted that, apart from fees and commissions income, all major income lines expanded at a slower pace in June 2026 compared with June 2025.

Rising Impairment Costs Raise Red Flags

Perhaps the biggest concern for banks is the sharp increase in provisions for depreciation, bad debts and impairment losses on financial assets.

These provisions increased by 38.2% in June 2026.

The increase is particularly striking when compared with June 2025, when the same cost category contracted by 14.8%.

The reversal means banks are setting aside substantially more resources to absorb potential losses associated with financial assets and bad debts.

For investors and stakeholders, the development could become an important indicator to watch as the year progresses because higher impairment charges can directly weaken profits.

Operating Costs Show Some Relief

Not all cost pressures moved in the wrong direction.

Operating expenses increased at a much slower pace during the review period. Growth in operating expenses eased to 6.0% in June 2026 from 21.4% a year earlier.

The Bank of Ghana attributed the moderation partly to slower growth in staff costs, while non-staff-related expenses contracted during the period.

This suggests that banks have made some progress in controlling their operational expenses, even as pressure builds from impairment-related costs.

However, the savings from slower operating expense growth were not sufficient to prevent an overall deterioration in profitability.

Return on Equity Takes a Major Hit

The weakening profit performance has also been reflected in key banking sector profitability indicators.

Return on Equity, or ROE, declined sharply to 22.9% in June 2026 from 32.2% in June 2025.

The fall represents a substantial deterioration in the returns generated for shareholders.

Return on Assets also weakened, dropping to 4.4% from 5.6% over the same period.

The simultaneous decline in ROE and ROA reinforces the picture of a banking sector facing reduced profitability despite continued expansion in some income categories.

Banking Margins Narrow Further

The pressure is also visible in the banking industry’s interest spread.

The spread narrowed significantly from 6.0% in June 2025 to 4.4% in June 2026.

Gross yields also fell sharply, dropping to 6.1% in June 2026 from 8.9% a year earlier.

Similarly, asset utilisation declined from 7.4% to 5.4%.

These movements point to a more difficult environment for banks to generate income from their assets.

Interestingly, the profitability ratio recorded a marginal improvement, increasing from 25.3% in June 2025 to 25.9% in June 2026.

What the Numbers Mean for Banks

The June 2026 figures present a mixed picture for Ghana’s banking industry.

On one hand, banks have maintained profitability at a significant GH¢7.1 billion level, while fees and commissions continue to grow strongly and operating expenses are rising at a slower pace.

On the other hand, the contraction in net interest income, declining ROE and ROA, narrowing interest spreads and sharp increases in impairment provisions highlight mounting challenges.

The biggest question now is whether banks can maintain earnings momentum in the second half of 2026.

With the low interest rate environment weighing on interest income and impairment costs rising sharply, banks may need to rely increasingly on fee-based income, stronger cost controls and improved asset quality to protect their bottom lines.
