Kim Kardashian has opened up about a recent health scare after being diagnosed with esophagitis, an inflammation of the esophagus that prompted hospitalization and stirred painful family memories. The revelation came in a trailer for the eighth season of Hulu’s reality series The Kardashians, released in mid-September 2026, where the 45-year-old star is shown discussing the condition and appearing in a hospital bed.

In the promotional footage, Kardashian tells her makeup team, “I have something called esophagitis.” She is later seen wearing a hospital gown, lying in a medical bed as staff attend to her. An off-camera voice asks whether the diagnosis is connected to the illness that killed her father.

Kardashian confirms it is linked, prompting an emotional response from her mother, Kris Jenner. “I can’t,” Jenner says in a confessional. “It makes me want to cry.”

Robert Kardashian, the prominent Los Angeles attorney who gained national attention as a member of O.J. Simpson’s defense team, died in September 2003 at the age of 59 from esophageal cancer. He was diagnosed only two months before his death. The family has long spoken about the suddenness of his illness and the lasting impact it left on them.

In 2019, Kim, Kourtney, and Khloé Kardashian helped establish the UCLA Robert G. Kardashian Center for Esophageal Health to advance research, treatment, and education around disorders of the esophagus in their father’s memory.

Medical experts note that esophagitis involves swelling and irritation of the lining of the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food and liquid from the mouth to the stomach. Common causes include acid reflux (gastroesophageal reflux disease), infections, certain medications, allergies, or injury. Diagnosis typically requires an endoscopy.

While esophagitis itself is not cancer, untreated or chronic cases can lead to complications such as Barrett’s esophagus, a condition that increases the risk of developing esophageal cancer. Doctors emphasize that early detection and treatment are important, especially for individuals with a family history of related diseases.

Kardashian’s disclosure fits a pattern of the family documenting personal health challenges on their long-running reality franchise. In a previous season she shared that a routine full-body scan had revealed a brain aneurysm, which physicians attributed in part to stress.

The new trailer positions the esophagitis episode as another vulnerable chapter, filmed amid the ongoing demands of her business empire, including the shape-wear and clothing brand Skims, and her high-profile personal life.

The timing of the trailer has generated significant online discussion. Posts circulating the hospital scenes quickly drew comments about the importance of paying attention to family medical history. Many noted that Robert Kardashian’s death occurred years before the family rose to global fame with the original Keeping Up with the Kardashians series, meaning younger audiences may be learning the full context for the first time through this latest update.

Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer remains a serious diagnosis with relatively poor survival rates when detected late, partly because early symptoms can be subtle or attributed to more common conditions such as heartburn. Awareness efforts by the Kardashian family through the UCLA center have aimed to encourage earlier screening and research into prevention and treatment.

The center brings together specialists in gastroenterology, surgery, oncology, and related fields to improve outcomes for patients with a range of esophageal disorders.

As of the trailer’s release, specific details about the severity of Kardashian’s esophagitis, the exact trigger, or the duration of her hospital stay have not been publicly shared beyond the footage itself. There has been no official statement from her representatives clarifying her current health status or treatment plan. The scenes appear intended to set up storylines for the new season rather than serve as a comprehensive medical update.

The emotional weight of the moment is clear in Jenner’s reaction. Having been married to Robert Kardashian from 1978 to 1991 and raising four children with him-Kourtney, Kim, Khloé, and Rob; Jenner has repeatedly described the lasting grief of his rapid decline. The family has marked anniversaries of his death with public tributes, often reflecting on how young the children were at the time and how his absence continues to shape their lives.

For viewers, the trailer underscores a recurring theme in the Kardashians’ programming: the intersection of extreme visibility and ordinary human vulnerability. Health issues, no matter how carefully managed or privately handled, become part of the public narrative once cameras are rolling.

In this case, the connection to a parent’s fatal illness adds a layer of intergenerational concern that resonates beyond the usual celebrity health headlines.

Season eight of The Kardashians is expected to continue documenting the family’s professional projects, relationships, and personal challenges. The inclusion of Kardashian’s hospitalization and diagnosis suggests producers intend to explore both the medical reality and the emotional fallout within the family.

Medical organizations consistently advise that individuals with a first-degree relative who had esophageal cancer discuss screening options with their physicians.

Kim Kardashian’s willingness to film and share this chapter continues a pattern of transparency that has defined much of her public life. While the full medical picture is not yet public, the trailer makes clear that the diagnosis carried both physical and emotional consequences for her and those closest to her.

As the new season approaches, audiences will learn more about how she and her family navigated the scare and what it has meant for their ongoing efforts to honor Robert Kardashian’s memory through awareness and research.
