Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education

The Ministry of Education has warmly congratulated and commended teachers across Ghana as the country joins the rest of the world to celebrate World Teachers’ Day 2026, describing teachers as central to the nation’s education system and the shaping of its future.

In a statement marking the occasion, the Ministry acknowledged the dedication, professionalism and sacrifices of Ghanaian teachers, with particular recognition for those serving in deprived and hard-to-reach communities across the country.

The Ministry described teachers as remaining at the heart of Ghana’s education system, playing a critical role in shaping the minds, character and future of the country’s children.

This recognition comes as the Ministry continues to navigate an ongoing nationwide teacher strike over unresolved concerns relating to promotion arrears, the Deprived Area Allowance and the Collective Agreement.

Broader Education Transformation Agenda

“Teachers remain at the heart of Ghana’s education system and play a critical role in shaping the minds, character and future of our children.”

The Ministry reaffirmed government’s commitment to an education transformation agenda that extends beyond access alone, focusing also on quality, learning outcomes, relevant skills and human capital development.

This framing positions teachers as central to the success of a reform agenda that spans multiple dimensions of the education system, rather than being limited to enrolment figures alone.

The statement emphasised that no education reform can succeed without teachers, underscoring the Ministry’s recognition that the achievement of broader policy goals depends fundamentally on the commitment and capacity of the teaching workforce.

Commitment To Strengthening the Profession

The Ministry pledged to continue working with teachers, their unions and other stakeholders to strengthen the teaching profession, support professional development, and address issues affecting teachers’ welfare and working conditions.

“We recognise that no education reform can succeed without teachers. The Ministry will therefore continue to work with teachers, their unions and other stakeholders to strengthen the teaching profession.”

This commitment is particularly notable given the current context, with the Ministry, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department and the teacher unions engaged in ongoing negotiations to resolve the grievances behind the nationwide strike currently affecting schools across the country.

On this special occasion, the Ministry called on parents, communities and all Ghanaians to appreciate and support teachers, whose work it described as fundamental to the country’s development.

This appeal reflects an effort to extend recognition of teachers’ contributions beyond government circles, encouraging broader societal acknowledgement of the role teachers play in national development.

 Direct Message of Gratitude

The Ministry closed its statement with a direct and personal message addressed to every teacher across the country, expressing appreciation for their dedication, sacrifice and role in shaping Ghana’s future.

“To every teacher, we say: thank you for your dedication, thank you for your sacrifice, thank you for shaping Ghana’s future.”

This year’s World Teachers’ Day commemoration comes at a particularly sensitive time, with Ghana’s pre-tertiary teacher unions currently engaged in an indefinite strike over unresolved issues, including delayed promotion placements, the unimplemented Deprived Area Allowance, and the stalled renewal of the Collective Agreement.

The Ministry’s acknowledgement of teachers’ sacrifices arrives alongside separate assurances from the Education Minister that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission would meet union leadership to negotiate a resolution to the dispute.

Balancing Celebration And Ongoing Negotiation

The timing of the Ministry’s statement reflects a broader effort to honour teachers’ contributions even as formal negotiations continue to address their specific grievances.

By pairing celebratory recognition with renewed commitments to strengthen the profession and address welfare concerns, the Ministry appears to be signalling both appreciation for teachers’ past and ongoing contributions, and an acknowledgement of the unresolved issues currently affecting the profession.

As Ghana marks World Teachers’ Day 2026 against the backdrop of continued industrial action, attention will remain focused on whether the Ministry’s renewed commitments translate into tangible progress in resolving the outstanding grievances.

The outcome of ongoing engagements between the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the teacher unions is likely to determine how quickly the goodwill expressed in today’s commemoration can be matched by concrete action on the issues driving the strike.
