Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has acknowledged Jordan Henderson’s legendary status at Liverpool but believes the England international may never truly become one of the Blues, despite his current involvement with the London club.
Henderson, 36, spent 12 years at Liverpool between 2011 and 2023, establishing himself as one of the club’s most influential midfielders and captains before departing for Saudi Arabia.
The midfielder was appointed Liverpool captain in 2015 following Steven Gerrard’s departure and held the position until his exit in 2023. During his eight years as skipper, he led the Reds to several major honours, including the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and their first English league title in 30 years in the 2019/20 season.
Speaking about Henderson’s standing at Chelsea, Mikel recognised the midfielder’s achievements at Anfield but questioned whether his history with Liverpool would allow him to develop the same identity with the Blues.
“I have nothing against Henderson, he played for Liverpool, he’s a Liverpool legend. I don’t think he will ever be one of us. But he is playing for us right now and we have to support him, he’s doing the job.”

Henderson’s Liverpool Legacy
Henderson joined Liverpool from Sunderland in June 2011 and went on to make 492 appearances across all competitions, scoring 33 goals during his 12-year spell at Anfield.

Although his early years at the club were marked by inconsistent performances and questions about his suitability for the team, he gradually established himself as a key figure under successive managers before becoming captain.
His leadership reached its peak in 2019 when Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the Champions League final at Wander Metropolitano in Madrid. Henderson lifted the European trophy as captain, ending the club’s long wait for another major continental triumph.
A year later, he led Liverpool to the Premier League title, their first league championship since 1990. The achievement followed a dominant campaign in which Jurgen Klopp’s side collected 99 points, with Henderson playing a significant role in their successful title pursuit.
Furthermore, Henderson helped Liverpool win the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in 2019, adding to a trophy collection that also included the FA Cup and League Cup.
His contribution earned him individual recognition, including the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award in 2020.
Henderson eventually left Liverpool for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in July 2023 before returning to European football with Ajax in January 2024. He subsequently joined Brentford before terminating his contract with the Bees to complete his move to Chelsea in the summer of 2026.
Mikel’s Chelsea Connection
Mikel’s assessment carries particular weight given his own lengthy association with Chelsea, where he spent about a decade after joining the club in 2006.
The former Nigeria international midfielder made 372 appearances for the Blues, scoring six goals across all competitions during a period in which he became an important part of the club’s midfield.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, Mikel won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League.

One of the defining moments of his Chelsea career came in 2012, when he played a key role in the club’s Champions League triumph over Bayern Munich. Chelsea secured their first UCL title through a penalty shootout victory at the Allianz Arena.
His experience at the club gives context to his comments about Henderson. While recognising the England international’s quality and achievements, Mikel appears to distinguish between performing a role for Chelsea and developing the lasting connection associated with players who have built their legacies at Stamford Bridge.
Henderson Makes Immediate Impact
Despite Nigerian’s reservations about Henderson’s long-term identity at Chelsea, the midfielder has already begun demonstrating the value of his experience.
Henderson has made two appearances for the Blues since joining the club, with his most recent outing producing an outstanding attacking display in their 5-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth last weekend.
The veteran midfielder scored twice including a stunnig free-kick and provided an assist, recording his first goal contributions for Chelsea since arriving from Brentford.

His performance offered an early indication of the qualities he can bring to the squad, particularly his composure, leadership and ability to influence matches.
Nevertheless, Henderson’s challenge will extend beyond his performances on the pitch. Having spent much of his career representing Liverpool, where he captained the club through one of its most successful modern periods, he must now establish a new connection with Chelsea supporters.
Mikel’s comments underline the distinction between respecting a player’s contribution and considering him part of a club’s identity.
For Henderson, his early performances provide an encouraging start. Whether he can build a lasting legacy at Stamford Bridge, however, will depend on what follows during his time in blue.
