The Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), in collaboration with UNESCO, has engaged students, parents and community stakeholders in Effutu to promote awareness of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) opportunities and encourage informed career choices.

The Community and Schools Sensitisation Project at the Unipra South Cluster of Schools in Winneba, focused on practical skills, career pathways and entrepreneurship as tools for preparing young people for the world of work. It also sought to strengthen community support for TVET by involving parents, educators, traditional authorities and religious leaders.

The programme brought together stakeholders, including Effutu Municipal Chief Executive Rev. Atta Mensah; the Effutu District Director of Education; the Effutu TVET Coordinator; the Chairperson of the Local Council of Churches; and the Chief Imam for the municipality.

Parents, teachers, students and representatives of the Effutu Traditional Council also participated, providing a platform to discuss the place of technical and vocational education in young people’s educational and career decisions.

By taking the sensitisation exercise directly to a school cluster, CTVET and UNESCO sought to bring information about TVET opportunities closer to learners and those who influence their choices.

The initiative placed schools and the wider community at the centre of efforts to improve understanding of technical and vocational pathways.

Practical skills and career pathways for young people

The engagement highlighted TVET as an avenue for equipping young people with practical skills to prepare them for employment and opportunities in the world of work.

It also drew attention to career pathways available through technical and vocational education and the potential for skills development to support entrepreneurship. The focus reflected the need to help students understand their options as they consider their education and future careers.

The organisers emphasised the importance of making information about these pathways accessible to students and their families. The project also recognised that awareness among learners alone may not be enough to change perceptions or encourage wider participation.

Parents and other influential community members have an important role in supporting young people as they assess educational options and make decisions about their futures.

Community leaders urged to challenge misconceptions

A central part of the engagement was the role of parents, educators, traditional authorities and religious leaders in addressing misconceptions about TVET.

The organisers stressed the need for these groups to encourage young people to consider technical and vocational education when making decisions about their studies and careers.

Their involvement matters because learners often look to families, teachers and community leaders for guidance when choosing an educational direction.

The participation of the Effutu Municipal Assembly, education officials, religious leaders and traditional representatives brought these voices into a shared discussion on skills development.

It reflected the project’s approach of building public understanding through collaboration between schools and the wider community.

By encouraging informed decisions, the initiative sought to help students consider TVET opportunities without being constrained by misconceptions surrounding the sector. The engagement linked career guidance with the broader objective of improving public support for technical and vocational education.

CTVET and UNESCO renew commitment to skills development

CTVET and UNESCO reaffirmed their commitment to bringing TVET information closer to schools and communities through the sensitisation initiative.

The collaboration is intended to promote inclusive access to skills development and strengthen public support for technical and vocational education.

Bringing parents, teachers, students and community leaders into the conversation forms part of that effort to make information accessible and encourage informed choices.

The Winneba engagement underscored the importance of connecting education discussions with practical skills and career opportunities. Through community participation, the project sought to build understanding of how TVET can contribute to individual development and prepare learners for work.

For CTVET and UNESCO, engagement with schools and communities remains central to promoting opportunities available through technical and vocational education.

The Effutu exercise provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss those opportunities and their responsibility in guiding young people towards educational and career pathways.

The initiative’s message centred on empowering learners, strengthening communities and supporting a better future through skills development.
