Transition to Renewable Energy

At the 2024 Future of Energy Conference, Dr. Riverson Oppong, CEO of the Association of Oil Marketing Companies (AOMC), emphasized the pressing need for Africa to adopt a tailored and comprehensive approach to energy transition.

Speaking during a key panel discussion on the theme “Innovation, Resilience, and Development in Africa’s Energy Systems”, Dr. Oppong drew inspiration from China’s multifaceted strategy in leveraging various energy solutions.

Dr. Oppong underscored the importance of Africa learning from global examples, particularly China’s multifaceted energy strategy, which leverages a combination of renewable and traditional energy sources.

“China’s approach, which balances extensive solar installations with significant coal capacities, offers a valuable lesson for Africa.

“As we transition, we must focus on industrialization and ensure energy security, so our progress is sustainable and inclusive.”

Dr. Riverson Oppong, CEO of the Association of Oil Marketing Companies (AOMC)

Dr. Oppong challenged the notion that Africa’s relatively low carbon emissions should exempt the continent from participating in the global energy transition.

“With 51% of our emissions stemming from the transport sector alone, we cannot afford complacency,” he stressed. He called for innovative solutions to reduce the continent’s carbon footprint, highlighting the significant role that various energy sources could play in this endeavor.

Among the energy solutions discussed, hydrogen stood out as a promising yet challenging option. Dr. Oppong noted that while hydrogen could play a crucial role in the energy mix, its potential is currently limited by challenges related to transportation and storage. He urged the energy sector to invest in overcoming these hurdles to fully harness hydrogen’s capabilities.

Dr. Oppong also pointed out that the drilling techniques used in geothermal energy production are similar to those in the oil and gas industry, suggesting that the existing expertise in oil and gas could be leveraged to develop geothermal energy.

“This is an area ripe for exploration, and I encourage our energy commissions to seriously consider its potential,” Dr. Oppong said.

Dr. Oppong again questioned the frequent exclusion of hydropower from renewable energy discussions. Despite its proven benefits and low carbon emissions, hydropower is often overlooked in favor of other renewable sources like solar and wind.

Dr. Oppong argued that hydropower, particularly in Africa, could be a key component in the continent’s energy transition, providing a stable and reliable energy source.

Education and Policy in the Energy Transition

Contrary to fears that the energy transition could lead to job losses, Dr. Oppong argued that it would instead transform the job market. He advocated for revamping Africa’s educational curriculum to equip students with the practical skills needed for the evolving energy sector.

“In the Middle East, petroleum engineers are being retrained to install solar panels. This is the kind of adaptability we need in Africa to ensure our workforce remains relevant and competitive.”

The migration of Africa’s brightest engineers to other continents was another issue Dr. Oppong addressed. Dr. Oppong emphasized the need to integrate emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), into African curricula to keep pace with global advancements and retain talent.

“We must invest in research and development, particularly in renewable energy, and support businesses building technologies in Africa to reduce our dependency on imports,” Dr. Oppong said.

Dr. Oppong also highlighted the importance of creating favorable policies that encourage the growth of startups and the development of skilled professionals. He urged governments to intentionally support local businesses in the energy sector.

Dr. Oppong punctuated the need for creating favorable policies encouraging the growth of startups and developing skilled professionals. He emphasized that it is time to renew this legacy to serve generations to come.

As Africa continues to navigate the complexities of energy transition, the insights from leaders like Dr. Oppong will be crucial in shaping policies and strategies that are both effective and equitable. The 2024 Future of Energy Conference served as a vital platform for these discussions, setting the stage for Africa’s energy future.
