A delegation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by former President John Dramani Mahama paid a visit to former President JA Kufuor and his family to extend their condolences over the passing of former First Lady Theresa Kufuor.
Mr Mahama, accompanied by his wife, former First Lady Lordina, said the deceased was affectionately known as the mother of the Nation during her tenure as First Lady due to her dignified personality.
The delegation included the national chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress Council of Elders, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu, members of the NDC Council of Elders, and the party’s Political Committee.
“We are all saddened by the passing of our respected mother, former First Lady Madam Theresa Kufuor. She carried herself with dignity and was truly acknowledged by the people of Ghana as the mother of the Nation. On this sad occasion, our hearts go out to the widower, President Agyekum Kufuor, and the entire family. May God grant her peaceful repose”.

Mahama Eulogizes NDC Stalwarts
The former President and the National Democratic Congress flagbearer for the 2024 General Election has also expressed his deepest regret on the passing of the party’s two stalwart figures, Honorable Enoch Teye Mensah, the former Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Constituency and Dr. Sidney Laryea, the former National Treasure of the National Democratic Congress.
According to Mr Mahama the two individuals both played key roles in shaping the building of the solid rock of the National Democratic Congress to what it is today.
“Very sad to lose two stalwarts of our great party, Honorable ET Mensah and Dr. Sidney Laryea. Both played key roles in shaping the solid rock our party was built on and anchored today. While ET was our first National Youth Organiser, Dr. Laryea served as the party’s first National Treasurer. They made their mark, and we wish them peaceful rest in the Lord. We extend our deepest condolences to both bereaved families”.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress leadership directed that all party flags both at the National Headquarters, Regional Offices and the 275 Constituencies fly at half-mast on Thursday, October 5 2023 in honor of the memory of its departed comrades, Enoch Teye Mensa and Dr. Sidney Laryea.
In a statement released by the party’s General Secreatry, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the National Democratic Congress indicated that it is very proud of the invaluable contributions of the late Enoch Teye Mensa and Dr. Sidney Laryea to the development of Ghana and the National Democratic Congress as a party.
The party indicated that it will join the respective families of the departed souls to honor their memories and give them a befitting burial.
The former first lady and wife to former President Kufour, Theresa Kufour died in her Peduase residence in Accra whiles the former Member of Parliament Enoch Teye Mensa died in South Africa, both on Sunday October 1 2023 after short illness.
President Nana Addo Akuffo Addo has ordered for flags to fly at half-mast from Monday, October 2 to end on Sunday, October 8 to honour the nation’s departed souls.
