Mahama's government hailed as public confidence hits record high

President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced the selection of its running mate. In a press release signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party named Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang as the running mate to the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama for the 2024 Presidential election.

Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang was also paired with the NDC’s flagbearer as a running mate for the 2020 Presidential election. She also served as the Educational Minister under the Atta–Mills–Mahama administration of the NDC from 2013 to 2017.

“Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is a distinguished academic and leader renowned for her dedication to education and public service. Having served as Minister for Education and as the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, she has emerged as a trailblazer for women in leadership across Ghana”.

The NDC indicated that the selection of Prof. Opoku Agyemang accentuates the NDC’s resolute commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and the empowerment of women in leadership roles. The NDC maintained that with the qualifications Prof. Opoku Agyemang possesses, she brings on board a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the NDC’s Presidential ticket.

The flagbearer of the NDC expressed his delight and confidence in the running mate chosen by the party and noted “I am proud to have Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as my running mate”.

Furthermore, the NDC flagbearer indicated that his partner for the election possesses integrity, dedication, and vision for a better Ghana. He maintained that these qualities make her the ideal candidate to join him in leading the NDC to victory in the upcoming 2024 Presidential election.

“The NDC is excited to present such a formidable team to lead the party’s ticket. With John Mahama and Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang at the forefront, the NDC is poised to introduce a bold and progressive vision for the future of Ghana”.

Furthermore, the General Secretary of the NDC disclosed that Prof. Opoku Agyemang was unanimously chosen by the Council of Elders and the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Party. He maintained that the fact that Prof. Opoku Agyemang was selected through a unanimous decision is proof of her prowess.

Naana Accepts Her Selection

Accepting her selection as the running mate to the NDC flagbearer, Prof. Opoku Agyemang stated that she is humbled and honored by the decision of the party to select her as John Mahama’s partner for the upcoming Presidential elections in December.

She further appreciated the former President, John Mahama, for his confidence in her and for nominating her as his running mate for the second time. She reasoned that by this choice, the NDC flagbearer has demonstrated remarkable consistency, an unwavering commitment to inclusivity and innovation, and an inspirational belief in the Ghanaian woman.

“I wish to convey my heartfelt appreciation to the NDC Council of Elders, the National Executive Committee, the rank and file of our party, friends, well-wishers, and indeed all Ghanaians for the overwhelming support and endorsement. I am not one to take lightly the confidence reposed in me, neither am I oblivious of the national decay and widespread despondency in our beloved country”.

Moreover, Prof. Opoku Agyemang expressed her readiness and commitment to collaborate with John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer, to serve the people of Ghana with truthfulness, hard work, and patriotism and to reposition Ghana as a beacon of hope and opportunity in the sub-Saharan.

She also showed her confidence in the competence of the former President to achieve great things for Ghana through selfless, incorruptible, and visionary leadership. She argued that the leadership of the former President is what Ghana needs to transform the country’s economic fortunes.

“Ghanaians are looking up to the NDC, and I firmly believe in our unflinching resolve and sacred pledge to work hard to build the Ghana we want together” she stated.

Meanwhile, some party supporters are against the nomination and subsequent selection of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang as the NDC flagbearer’s running mate for the second time. They argued that Prof. Agyemang does not bring much to the ticket and that she may compromise the party’s fortune at the 2024 Presidential polls.
