The Director General of Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye has disclosed that the covid-19 outbreak in schools seem to be under control.
Following his disclosure, he indicated that about 96.5 per cent of the total covid-19 cases recorded in schools have recovered.
“So, that outbreak in the schools seem to be under some control. I am sure the [ the schools have started adhering to the protocols].”

During a press briefing held by the Ministry of Information in Accra, the Director General stated that 453 schools in Ghana have recorded covid-19 cases. He explained that the total of number of students that have tested positive for covid from each of the schools is equal to 3,113.
Recently, there are about 136 active cases as compared to the previous 504 active recorded cases, Dr. Kumah uncovered. This constitutes only about 4.4 per cent of the total recorded cases.
According to the Director General of the health service, out of all the regions, Volta recorded the highest number cases (708) which comprises of nearly 22.7 per cent of the entire recorded cases. However, North East Region is the only region with no cases recorded in schools.
Despite the high number of overall cases recorded so far, no death has been documented except for the incident of a student who had underlining health conditions and as result, died of covid.
Dr. Kuma-Aboagye further declared that, Covid-19 Response Teams (CRT) have been tasked to go and assist regions with high number of cases recorded.
Regional distribution of active cases in schools
The Director General of Ghana Health Service further indicated that out of the 136 active cases recorded in the schools, Ashanti, Volta and Oti Regions comprises of 49, 40 and 21 cases respectively.
Bono East documented 10 active cases whilst Greater Accra Region recorded only 6. However, Western, Ahafo and Eastern Region’s active cases were all below 5. Specifically, Western Region had 4 active cases while Ahafo and Eastern Region equally recorded 3 cases each.
Covid-19 international arrivals update
During Dr. Patrick Kumah’s update on covid cases pertaining to international arrivals, he revealed that as of Sunday, August 15 2021, the entire number of recorded cases stood at 2,532 which constitutes 0.59 per cent of the total tests conducted (428,760).
Out of the total tests carried, 62.5 per cent were males whilst the other 37.5 per cent comprised of females.
The Director General of Ghana Health Service also indicated that, non-Ghanaians were the greatest constituents of the test representing about 59 per cent. Meanwhile, Ghanaians constituted only 41 per cent.
He announced that, since the airport was opened in September 1st, 2020, the highest number of covid-19 cases were recorded in the month of July.
Johnson and Johnson Vaccines
Speaking on the covid-19 vaccines, the Director General stated that through the African Vaccine Alliance Trust (AVAT), they have received 177,600 doses of Johnson and Johnson.
He mentioned that, the vaccine delivery will be focused on 11 districts in Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions due to the intensity of the pandemic cases in these areas in question.
Dr. Kuma-Aboagye also stated that, a refresher training had been completed through the National Regional Planning and Training. He further explained that, the training was necessary because it will sensitize people on the side effects, the size of the bottle and how much of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine to be drawn for injection since it is the first time it will be given out.
