Former President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has congratulated His Majesty, King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

John Dramani Mahama described the coronation ceremony as ‘splendid’.

King Charles and Queen Camilla have been crowned on a historic day of pageantry on Saturday, May 6. The UK Media reported that thousands packed the Mall, despite the rain, after a deeply religious Coronation service at Westminster Abbey and a huge procession through London.

John Dramani Mahama tweeted regarding the coronation: “Congratulations His Majesty King Charles III & Queen Camilla. That was a splendid coronation ceremony. Lordina and I wish you a successful and highly impactful reign.”

It was a resplendent display of culture from across the globe, as King Charles III was officially crowned King of the United Kingdom on Saturday, May 6, taking over from his mother Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Thursday, September 8, 2022.

The coronation also saw King Charles’ wife, Camilla, also crowned Queen.

Guests from across the world stepped up in colourful wears. King of Ashanti Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was in attendance, alongside his wife, Lady Julia, in their traditional regalia.

However, the outfit of Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has become the talk of town. Some people on social media have criticized his choice of clothing to such a ceremony that marks history.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was seen dressed in a Western suit. He was in the company of his wife, Rebecca, whose colourful Kente dress radiated the colours of Ghana. Some comments from social media suggests that the President should have also been in an African print that showcases the culture of Ghana just as his wife did.

Along with what is fundamentally a Christian church service, there was a concerted effort to make the ceremony a more multi-faith and varied occasion. There were Muslim, Jewish, Sikh, and Buddhist delegates, and the prime minister reading from the Bible is Rishi Sunak, a Hindu. Black and Asian individuals played important roles in the celebration, including public personalities and clergy. For the first time in a thousand years, women bishops took part in the Coronations. As a tribute to the King’s late father, Prince Philip II, there were words in Welsh, Scottish, Irish Gaelic, and a Byzantine chant in Greek.

The Queen Consort Camilla was anointed and crowned in a less beautiful and formal ceremony, and she was not required to swear an oath. Queen Mary’s Crown was been bestowed upon her.

As the music proceeded, the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, stationed at Horse Guards Parade and further down the River Thames at the Tower of London, fired a cannon salute. Gun salutes were fired at 13 different locations across the UK, including Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast, as well as on naval vessels. The standard salvo consisted of 21 shots, fired at 10-second intervals.

However, a few hundred anti-monarchy demonstrators gathered in Trafalgar Square. The Coronation service which was broadcast over loudspeakers to the throng and the demonstrators always yelled “Not my king”, whenever the words King Charles were invoked.
