The Member of Parliament for the Yapei-Kusawgu constituency in the Savannah Region, John Abdulai Jinapor has expressed deep concern over the direction in which the country is heading and called for a reevaluation of the government’s economic policies.

The National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament reacting to claims by the Honorable Andrew Egyapa Mercer, the Member of Parliament for Sekondi in the Western Region touting the New Patriotic Party administration’s superior management of the country’s economy, vehemently opposed to the narrative and urged the ruling party to admit it has failed to manage the affairs of the country.

The Member of the Parliament Committee on Energy and Mines also rejected calls by some members of the ruling party and the public that the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is not responsible for the economic mismanagement of the ruling New Patriotic Party administration.

The Honorable Jinapor, however, urged the ruling New Patriotic Party to acknowledge the economic challenges facing the nation and further challenged the assertion that COVID-19 alone is responsible for the country’s current state of affairs.

The Yapei-Kusawgu Member of Parliament questioned the imposition of various taxes and levies that the governing New Patriotic Party has imposed on Ghanaians since it assumed office in 2017.

According to Honorable John Abdulai Jinapor, the various taxes and levies that have been imposed on Ghanaians by the governing New Patriotic Party administration have further worsened the economic hardship experienced by citizens.

“And you see Honorable Egyapa you cannot force us to accept that we are in this mess due to Covid-19. Covid-19 cannot be blamed for the mess. How come, all the other countries not experience the conditions Ghana is experiencing? Mention which country its citizens are paying for COVID levy.

“Is Cote d’voire, Nigeria among other countries in the sub-region paying covid-19 levy? You tell me one, country where they have imposed a levy called covid recovery levy. Look you have messed up this economy and instead of apologising to Ghanaians, you are hear justifying the hardship you have imposed on Ghanaians”.

Jinapor Criticises Government For Failing To Implement Appropriate Revenue Measures

Furthermore, the former Deputy Minister of Power under the National Democratic Congress and Mahama-led administration criticized the government’s failure to implement revenue measures outlined in the budget and further chastised the government for burdening Ghanaians through excessive taxation.

He underscored the disconnect between the governing New Patriotic Party promises while in opposition to shift the country from taxation to production and the current reality of increased financial burdens on the populace.

Moreover, the Honorable John Abdulai Jinapor highlighted the growing dissent within the ruling New Patriotic Party itself, referring to recent remarks by the party’s National Organizer, who expressed concerns about the impact of certain policies on the party’s chances in upcoming elections.

According to him, the remarks by the ruling party’s National Organizer are a clear demonstration that the New Patriotic Party administration led by President Akufo-Addo has failed in the discharge of their mandate to Ghanaians.

“I am not saying it; it is you the NPP National Organizer who is saying that this government is making it difficult for them to campaign and that they should withdraw the Emission levy and the tax on electricity consumption immediately. This is the NPP’s National Organizer”.

In addition, the Honorable Jinapor urged citizens to carefully evaluate the impact of government policies on their daily lives and vote against the ruling New Patriotic Party in the December 7 2024 general elections.

He emphasized that the upcoming elections should be a referendum on the living conditions of Ghanaians.
