Moliy Explains Her Record Label Hesitation

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Moliy Ama Montgomery has shared her reservations about signing on to a music label.

The global sensation revealed that her hesitation stems from the restrictions and challenges that often come with label deals. She believes being tied to a label could compromise the creative freedom she enjoys as an independent artiste.

The ‘Shake It to the Max’ hitmaker said she values trust and organic relationships with the people she works with, something she doubts a label can provide.

“Yeah. I’ve always been kind of hesitant to be a label artist because I’ve just heard so many stories. I always feel like the people I work with, I want to trust them. I want it to feel organic. I don’t just wanna be a name on a list. Music is very personal to me. So, I think if I did get locked in with a label, I hope it’s something that could be a real, long-lasting, organic relationship.”

She added that her independence allows her to take full control of her creative process and pace.

“The most freeing part is just getting to do what I want creatively without someone telling me what to do. I don’t like being told what to do. Also, if you’re not pushing yourself, if you’re not putting your foot on the gas, no one is gonna do it for you. That’s what I love the most.”

Moliy also recounted how her hit single ‘Shake It to the Max’ came to life after a year-long break from releasing music.

“I realized at some point, I was actively seeking [distribution]. I hadn’t released music for a whole year in 2024, and me and my manager were trying to get a [distribution deal] so I could put out music. The conversations were sounding positive, but nothing was actually happening. I remember I still wanna move. I don’t wanna be stagnant.

“My manager was like, ‘You should tease music. At least tease music and let people know you’re working, and maybe they will hear it and be interested.’ So that’s what started this whole thing.”

The decision to join a record label is fraught with complexities that warrant careful consideration. While the allure of a label’s resources and exposure is tempting, the potential loss of artistic freedom, the pitfalls of commercialism, and the rise of independent alternatives present compelling reasons for hesitation.

As the music industry continues to evolve, aspiring artists must weigh their options and consider what truly matters to them in their creative journeys.

For many, the path of independence provides the authenticity and freedom they seek, allowing them to craft their musical narratives on their own terms. Ultimately, the choice should reflect an artist’s values and aspirations, ensuring that their music remains a true expression of their identity.

Moliy, in a post shared on X on July 9, 2025, noted that individuals fond of body shaming could continue with their unwarranted behaviour.

She explained that she was not perturbed by abusive comments so far as her physique was concerned. “The more you try to body shame me the more me and my fupa pull up with the sexiness,” she said.

Moliy added that individuals constantly body shaming her can notify her what they want to see about her body. “Just tell me that’s what you wanna see cos idk why we’re going back and forth about this,” she added.

Body shaming is a pervasive issue that affects singers and, by extension, society as a whole. The culture of criticism that thrives on social media not only harms the mental health of artists but also perpetuates damaging beauty standards.

It is crucial for individuals to recognize the impact of their words and to foster an online environment that celebrates diversity and promotes self-acceptance.

By collectively working towards a more compassionate and supportive culture, audience empower singers to thrive in their artistry and inspire their fans to embrace their true selves.
