The National Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo, has assured that the party will prioritise peace and lawful conduct in the forthcoming Akwatia by-election.

His comments came during a leadership meeting with the clergy at the Akwatia GCD Walker Club where he emphasised that the NDC’s approach to the by-election will reflect its deep commitment to democracy.

Opare Addo made clear that the NDC will not tolerate or participate in any act that could destabilise the electoral process. He said the party has already taken steps to caution its members and supporters, urging them to uphold the highest standards of discipline throughout the campaign period and on election day.

“NDC is a law-abiding party; we will not indulge in any acts that will destabilise this country. We’re the midwives of Ghana’s democracy; we hold it very dear. Whatever we have to do to safeguard democracy, we will do”

The Youth Organiser explained that party supporters have been directed to refrain from acts that could spark violence during the campaign or at the polls.

“We have told our brothers on the other side that we will not countenance any violence from anybody,” he said, stressing that a message has been sent to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), warning that the NDC would not tolerate any provocation from its opponents.

Beyond appealing to party members and the opposition, the NDC Youth Organiser placed responsibility on the Ghana Police Service to maintain order during the election. According to him, effective policing will be crucial in ensuring that the by-election remains peaceful and credible.

He appealed to the police to remain vigilant in discharging its duties. Opare Addo called on security agencies to act firmly and impartially against any individual or group attempting to disrupt the peace of Akwatia.

He further underscored that the NDC’s commitment to nonviolence was not only about adhering to democratic principles but also about safeguarding the trust of Ghanaians in the electoral system.

Party Unity and Democratic Traditions

Opare Addo also lauded efforts by senior party members in Akwatia to foster unity ahead of the polls.

He singled out Erasmus Koney Ali, popularly known as Asanka Poyooyo, and former Member of Parliament Henry Boakye Yiadom, for demonstrating maturity by setting aside past differences and joining forces to lead the campaign for the NDC parliamentary candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo.

He described this unity as a vital boost for the NDC’s prospects in the constituency, insisting that internal cohesion remains one of the party’s strongest assets in the electoral contest. “We’re a united party and we believe that in unity we will be able to win the Akwatia seat,” he remarked.

In his address, Opare Addo highlighted the historical role of the NDC in Ghana’s democratic journey, arguing that the party’s adherence to law and order was a continuation of its legacy as a founding pillar of the Fourth Republic. He said the NDC would not compromise this heritage for short-term electoral gains.

He maintained that as Ghanaians prepare for the Akwatia by-election, the NDC would focus on promoting issues-based campaigning rather than engaging in confrontations that risk undermining peace.

The assurance from the NDC Youth Organiser comes at a time when political tensions often heighten during by-elections, and concerns about security and violence are never far from the public discourse.

His call reflects both the party’s desire to secure victory and its recognition that Ghana’s democratic stability must be protected above all else.
