Galamsey Menace Head-On

The enforcement exercise, which took place on November 5th, 2025, was part of a nationwide directive by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to crack down on illegal mining activities and the sale of banned “changfan” machines – equipment used in the destructive practice of galamsey, or illegal small-scale mining.
During the operation in Dadwene, near Obuasi, the team encountered armed men believed to be protecting an illegal mining site, prompting a tactical withdrawal to preserve lives.
Unfortunately, the incident took a tragic turn when one of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) vehicles was later involved in an accident, leaving three EPA officers and five journalists from Channel One TV, Joy TV, Adom TV, and TV3 injured.
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) acknowledged the swift response and ongoing support of the security agencies and the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, who have ensured that all affected personnel receive the necessary care and assistance.

The Environmental Protection Authority has over the years been one of the government agencies spearheading the battle against illegal mining, which has caused widespread environmental degradation and water pollution in the country.
The agency’s recent operation and the subsequent attack on its team underscore the challenges it faces in enforcing environmental regulations and protecting the country’s natural resources.
Despite the unpleasant setback, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) remained steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the country’s natural resources particularly the environment.
The EPA’s resolute stance reflects the gravity of the situation and the agency’s unwavering commitment to its mandate.
By confronting the galamsey menace head-on, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is playing a crucial role in preserving Ghana’s natural assets and securing a sustainable future for the nation.
Effective Enforcement

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) also acknowledged the support of the security agencies and the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, underscoring the importance of inter-agency cooperation in tackling environmental crimes. Additionally, the authority as well urged the public to continue supporting lawful environmental enforcement and to stand united in the national effort to end illegal mining.
While the EPA continues its relentless pursuit of environmental protection, the attack on its enforcement team has only strengthened the agency’s resolve.
By commending the bravery of its officers and journalists, the Authority sends a clear message that it will not be deterred by acts of violence and intimidation.
Instead, the agency remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources and securing a sustainable future for the country.
