Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has held high level talks in Ukraine with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, focusing on the humanitarian release of two Ghanaian citizens currently being held as prisoners of war.
The meeting formed part of a diplomatic engagement aimed at safeguarding Ghanaian lives caught up in the ongoing conflict and strengthening bilateral relations between Accra and Kyiv.
In a statement following the meeting, the Foreign Affairs Minister said the discussions were candid and constructive, centering on Ghana’s appeal for the release of the detained citizens on humanitarian grounds.
He stressed that the mission was undertaken in line with the government’s responsibility to protect its nationals abroad, particularly those facing extreme risks in conflict zones.
Protecting Ghanaian Citizens Under International Law
During the engagement, Minister Ablakwa conveyed the appreciation of John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana to President Zelenskyy for ensuring that the rights of the detained Ghanaians are being respected in accordance with international law.

He noted that Ghana attaches the highest importance to the humane treatment of its citizens, regardless of the circumstances under which they find themselves.
According to the Minister, assurances were given that the detainees are being treated within the framework of international humanitarian standards. He described this commitment as critical in maintaining trust between the two governments while negotiations continue.
“Every Ghanaian life matters to this administration,” he emphasized, underscoring the government’s resolve to pursue all lawful avenues to secure the release of its citizens.
Addressing Human Trafficking and Youth Vulnerability
Beyond the immediate humanitarian appeal, the bilateral talks also addressed a growing concern about trafficking networks that prey on vulnerable young people from Africa.
Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Ablakwa explained that these networks often lure unsuspecting youth with false promises, only for them to end up exposed to grave danger, including active conflict zones.
The discussions explored how Ghana and Ukraine could collaborate more effectively to combat such criminal networks. Both sides acknowledged that trafficking has become an increasingly transnational threat requiring coordinated intelligence sharing, preventive public education, and stronger enforcement mechanisms.
The Minister noted that addressing the root causes of youth vulnerability, including unemployment and misinformation, would be essential in preventing future tragedies.

Minister Ablakwa expressed optimism about the outcome of the negotiations, noting that the tone of engagement with the Ukrainian leadership was encouraging. While he refrained from providing timelines or specific conditions, he indicated that the humanitarian appeal had been clearly received and was being given serious consideration.
Diplomatic sources say such engagements reflect Ghana’s preference for dialogue and quiet diplomacy, particularly in sensitive situations involving prisoners of war. Observers note that Ghana’s non aligned posture and emphasis on humanitarian principles may strengthen its case as discussions progress.
Expanding Bilateral Cooperation
In addition to the immediate security and humanitarian concerns, Hon Ablakwa noted that the meeting opened broader discussions on deepening Ghana Ukraine relations.
The two sides identified strategic areas for enhanced cooperation, including agriculture, defence, education, and trade. These sectors were highlighted as offering mutual benefits, particularly in knowledge exchange, capacity building, and market access.
Agriculture featured prominently in the talks, with Ghana exploring opportunities to learn from Ukraine’s experience as a major global producer, while sharing its own expertise in tropical agriculture.

Defence cooperation was also discussed in the context of training and institutional capacity, while education and trade were seen as platforms for people to people engagement and economic diversification.
Invitation to Strengthen Diplomatic Ties
A notable outcome of the meeting was a formal invitation extended by President Zelenskyy to President Mahama to visit Kyiv. The invitation signals Ukraine’s interest in elevating diplomatic ties with Ghana and strengthening engagement with Africa more broadly.
Such high level exchanges could position Ghana as an important diplomatic partner, particularly as Ukraine seeks to broaden its international alliances. For Ghana, the invitation underscores its growing diplomatic footprint and its role as a voice for humanitarian considerations on the global stage.

The visit reflects the Mahama administration’s emphasis on proactive diplomacy and citizen centered foreign policy. By prioritizing the safety and dignity of Ghanaians abroad, the government is reinforcing its commitment to consular protection as a core pillar of international engagement.
The mission also highlights Ghana’s broader approach to global affairs, which combines humanitarian advocacy with pragmatic cooperation. As negotiations continue, officials say Ghana will remain engaged at multiple levels to ensure that its citizens are protected and that bilateral relations with Ukraine continue to evolve constructively.
