The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) delivered another strong performance as its benchmark index crossed a significant threshold, highlighting the sustained momentum in the country’s equity market.
Despite a slight dip in trading volume, investor appetite remained strong as several key stocks recorded impressive gains.
At the close of the trading session, the GSE Composite Index achieved a notable milestone, reflecting growing confidence among investors and the strengthening outlook for Ghana’s capital market.
Regarding the performance of GSE market indices, the benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) increased by 270.78 (1.97%) points to close at 14,005.32, representing a 1-week gain of 14.24%, a 4-week gain of 55.21%, and an overall year-to-date gain of 59.69%.
Crossing the 14,000 mark represents a significant milestone for the exchange and signals strong investor optimism. The remarkable growth in the index over the past month and since the start of the year suggests that the Ghanaian equities market is experiencing one of its strongest rallies in recent years.
Market watchers attribute this performance to improved macroeconomic stability, renewed investor confidence, and strong corporate results from several listed firms.
Trading Activity Reflects Mixed Signals
At the end of the trading session on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE), a total of 3,583,308 shares, corresponding to a market value of GHS 39,817,968.17, were traded. Compared with the previous GSE trading day (Tuesday, March 3), the data shows 27% decline in volume but 1% improvement in turnover.
Although fewer shares were traded compared to the previous session, the slight improvement in turnover indicates that investors were still actively committing funds into the market. Market analysts often interpret such patterns as a sign that high-value stocks are driving transactions even when overall trading volumes decline.
The market session saw participation from a broad range of equities across multiple sectors, demonstrating continued engagement by both institutional and retail investors.
Majority of Stocks End in Positive Territory
In the aggregate, 20 GSE listed equities participated in trading, ending with 10 gainers and just one loser. The strong performance across most equities helped support the upward movement in the broader market indices.
Standard Chartered Bank emerged as the top performer on the day. The stock recorded an impressive surge in its share price, reinforcing the growing strength of banking stocks on the exchange.
Standard Chartered Bank led the gainers with 9.99% share price appreciation closing at GHS 51.96 per share, followed by GCB Bank (+9.98%), Ghana Oil Company (+9.9%) and Enterprise Group (+9.76%).
The performance of these companies highlights the resilience of Ghana’s banking, energy, and financial services sectors. Investors have increasingly shown interest in these sectors as they continue to deliver stable earnings and growth prospects.
However, not all stocks recorded gains during the session.
The only equity that lost value on the day was Societe Generale Ghana (-0.96%).
While the loss was marginal, it stood out as the sole decline in an otherwise positive trading day on the exchange.
MTN Ghana Leads Market Volume
In terms of trading activity, MTN Ghana dominated the market by recording the highest volume of shares traded during the session.
MTN Ghana recorded the highest volume of 1.97 million traded shares, followed by GCB Bank (441,752), Ecobank Transnational (279,356) and CalBank (233,618).
The telecommunications giant has consistently remained one of the most actively traded stocks on the Ghana Stock Exchange due to its strong investor base and high market liquidity.
Financial sector stocks also featured prominently among the most traded equities, which reflects the continued importance of banking institutions within the Ghanaian capital market.
Financial Stocks Drive Market Rally
Financial sector equities played a key role in driving the overall market performance during the trading session. The Financial Stocks Index recorded even stronger gains than the broader market index.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also increased by 3.65% to reach 8,805.87 points, making it a 1-week gain of 26.13%, a 4-week gain of 77.71%, and a year-to-date gain of 89.49%.
This impressive performance highlights the central role of banks and financial institutions in powering the market’s upward trajectory. Financial stocks often act as a barometer of economic health, and their strong performance suggests improved confidence in Ghana’s financial sector.
Market Capitalisation Strengthens
The overall size and value of the Ghana Stock Exchange also remained robust as the rally continued.
The current market capitalization of the Ghana Stock Exchange is GHS 256.7 billion.
This valuation reflects the growing strength of listed companies and the increasing value of equities on the exchange. A higher market capitalization also enhances the attractiveness of the exchange to both domestic and international investors seeking exposure to Ghana’s economic growth.
With the GSE Composite Index breaking new ground and several stocks delivering strong gains, market analysts expect continued interest in equities as investors seek opportunities within Ghana’s recovering economy.
If the current momentum is sustained, the Ghana Stock Exchange could see further milestones in the weeks ahead as confidence in the country’s financial markets continues to build.
