The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has declared that the Ashanti Region can no longer be regarded as the exclusive stronghold of the New Patriotic Party following the opposition party’s improved electoral performance in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking during a stop at Nsuta Kwamang Beposo as part of his three-day regional “Thank You Tour,” he stated that the results marked a turning point in Ghana’s political landscape.
Addressing chiefs, residents, and party supporters, he emphasized that the gains made by the National Democratic Congress reflect a broader shift in voter alignment within a region long perceived as politically predictable.
According to him, the evolving electoral outcomes demonstrate that political loyalties in the region are no longer fixed and that the Ashanti Region is becoming increasingly competitive.
Strategic Expansion Drives Electoral Gains
Mr. Asiedu Nketia explained that the party’s improved performance was the result of a deliberate strategy to expand its presence across the region ahead of the 2024 elections. Historically, he noted, the NDC’s activities in the Ashanti Region were limited to a few constituencies where it maintained a modest support base.
In a departure from that approach, the party intensified its outreach efforts, engaging communities across all districts. This broader engagement, he said, allowed the NDC to connect more effectively with voters and present its policies to a wider audience.

He indicated that the results validated the strategy, as the party succeeded in significantly increasing its vote share across the region. The expanded footprint, he added, positioned the NDC as a more competitive force in what had previously been considered difficult electoral terrain.
The NDC chairman pointed to notable improvements in the party’s vote share as evidence of shifting political dynamics. He explained that in previous elections, securing approximately 28 percent of the vote in the Ashanti Region was often seen as adequate for a party seeking national victory.
However, in the 2024 elections, the NDC exceeded that benchmark by pushing its performance beyond 30 percent and approaching 35 percent. This increase, he said, reflects growing acceptance of the party among voters in the region.
He described the development as a clear indication that the political landscape is evolving, with more voters willing to consider alternatives beyond traditional party strongholds.
Parliamentary Gains Reinforce Momentum
In addition to improvements in vote share, the NDC also recorded significant gains in parliamentary representation within the region. Mr. Asiedu Nketia noted that the party increased its seats from a historical range of three to four constituencies to eight seats in the 2024 polls.
This outcome represents the party’s strongest parliamentary performance in the Ashanti Region to date. He said the gains highlight the effectiveness of the party’s grassroots engagement and the growing trust among constituents.
The increase in parliamentary seats, he added, further demonstrates that the region is no longer politically one sided and that electoral outcomes are becoming more competitive.
Despite the shifting dynamics, Mr. Asiedu Nketia stressed that the Ashanti Region remains central to Ghana’s electoral process. He noted that due to its size and influence, no political party can realistically win national power without making significant inroads in the region.

He explained that the NDC’s improved performance underscores the importance of sustained engagement and strategic investment in the region. According to him, political success in Ghana requires a nationwide approach that includes strong representation in key regions such as Ashanti.
The ruling party’s chairman emphasized that the party would continue to prioritize the region in its political strategy moving forward.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia likened the party’s relationship with voters in the Ashanti Region to a long term commitment that requires consistent attention. He indicated that the NDC intends to maintain its presence and deepen its engagement with communities across the region.
He noted that political support is built over time and must be nurtured through continuous interaction, responsiveness, and delivery on promises. The party, he said, is committed to strengthening its connection with voters and addressing their concerns.
This approach, he added, is essential for consolidating the gains made in the 2024 elections and building a stronger foundation for future contests.
Role of Traditional Leaders and Communities
The NDC chairman also acknowledged the contributions of traditional leaders, religious groups, and community members to the party’s improved performance. He expressed appreciation for their support, guidance, and encouragement during the election period.
He noted that the involvement of these stakeholders played a significant role in shaping the party’s outreach efforts and strengthening its relationship with local communities.

According to him, the collaboration between political actors and community leaders is vital for fostering trust and ensuring meaningful engagement with voters.
The remarks by Mr. Asiedu Nketia highlight a broader shift in Ghana’s political environment, where traditional strongholds are becoming more contested. The evolving dynamics in the Ashanti Region suggest that electoral outcomes are increasingly influenced by strategy, engagement, and responsiveness to voter needs.
As political parties adapt to these changes, the focus is likely to shift toward sustained grassroots engagement and policy driven campaigns. The NDC’s performance in the region may serve as a reference point for future electoral strategies across the country.
The developments also underscore the growing importance of voter participation and the role of local communities in shaping national outcomes.
