Hohoe United FC have been officially charged by the Ghana Football Association for allegedly breaching provisions of the Ghana Premier League Regulations, 2025, following their decision to withdraw from the ongoing season.

The club is accused of violating Articles 13(1) and 34(6)(d), with the GFA alleging that Hohoe United withdrew from the competition “without just cause”.

The governing body further contends that the club’s conduct has brought “the game into disrepute” and have been given a deadline until Tuesday, April 14, 2026, to formally respond to the charges.

The disciplinary action follows the club’s failure to honour their Matchday 28 fixture against Eleven Wonders, a development that effectively confirmed their withdrawal from the competition with seven matches still left to play.

The decision to pull out of the league was taken during an emergency meeting held on April 1, involving both the club’s board and management. It marked a dramatic and controversial end to what had been Hohoe United’s maiden campaign in the Ghana Premier League.

At the time of their withdrawal, the newly promoted side were in the relegation zone, having accumulated 30 points from 27 matches.

While their survival prospects remained uncertain, club officials have insisted that a combination of adverse conditions made it difficult to continue competing under what they described as an “uneven playing field“.

Central to their concerns is a three-match home ban imposed by the GFA after the club was found to have failed to provide adequate security during a league fixture at the Hohoe Sports Stadium.

The sanction has been strongly criticised by club officials, who argue that its timing during the final stretch of the season significantly undermined their chances of survival.

Statistics appear to support their argument regarding the importance of home advantage. Of the 30 points earned this season, 20 were secured at home, highlighting the role of familiar territory and fan support in their performances.

However, the home ban meant that Hohoe United were scheduled to play only one of their remaining seven matches at their home ground. The other six fixtures were set to be played away, including matches in which they were designated as the home team but required to use alternative venues.

The Role of Officiating

Beyond the disciplinary sanction, the club had also raised concerns about officiating standards throughout the campaign. Officials have cited what they describe as inconsistent refereeing decisions, which they believe contributed to their struggles during a debut season that had initially promised to be a historic milestone.

Despite these grievances, the GFA’s position suggests that such concerns do not justify withdrawal from the competition.

The local football governing body is now expected to assess whether the club’s reasons meet the threshold for “just cause” under its regulations. If found guilty, Hohoe United could face a range of sanctions, including fines, points deductions, or further disciplinary measures that could affect their standing within Ghanaian football.

The situation also revives memories of a similar incident involving Nsoatreman FC, who withdrew from the league before the conclusion of last season. In that case, fixtures involving the club were awarded as 3-0 victories to their opponents, a decision that had a direct impact on the final league standings.

Nsoatreman cited unfair treatment and hostile reception during away matches as reasons for their withdrawal, particularly following a violent incident involving supporters in a fixture against Asante Kotoko.

The recurrence of such incidents has raised broader concerns about stability and governance within the Ghana Premier League, as well as the ability of clubs to operate under challenging competitive and administrative conditions.

Hohoe United must now turn attention to responding to the charges labeled against them by the GFA. Their explanation will be crucial in determining the outcome of the case and could set an important precedent for how similar situations are handled in the future.
