The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has officially expressed deep sorrow following the tragic boat accident on the Volta Lake, which has reportedly claimed several lives, including women and children, while others remain unaccounted for.

The incident has triggered widespread concern across the country, prompting a swift administrative response to provide immediate relief to those devastated by the loss.

In a formal release, the Sector Minister, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, on behalf of the Ministry, extended her deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this harrowing maritime disaster. The Minister described the development as “deeply distressing” and assured the relatives of the victims that the Ministry stands in full solidarity with them during this incredibly difficult period.

The tragedy occurred on the evening of Wednesday, April 8, 2026, on the Volta Lake, a vital but often dangerous transport artery for inland communities. A local vessel carrying 14 passengers was navigating the Yeji–Congo route when it was overtaken by sudden, severe weather conditions. According to reports from survivors and local authorities, the vessel was battered by strong winds and surging waves between Sikakope and Mataiko.

The boat’s operator attempted to maneuver the craft toward the shore for an emergency landing, but the sheer force of the storm caused the boat to capsize at approximately 5:30 p.m. While five male passengers were able to swim to safety or were rescued by local fishermen who braved the storm to help, the remaining nine passengers predominantly women and children were swept away. As of today, search and recovery teams have retrieved seven bodies, while two individuals remain missing and officials confirmed that no life jackets were in use at the time of the accident.

Recognizing the immense psychological and financial toll on the affected community, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey has directed the Department of Social Welfare to take immediate action. The department is instructed to collaborate closely with relevant district authorities to engage the affected families without any delay.

“The loss of women and young children in such a tragic manner is a blow to the entire nation. Our hearts go out to the families who are currently waiting for news or preparing to lay their loved ones to rest. We will not leave them to face this burden alone.”

The Ministry’s intervention is designed to be comprehensive, focusing on deploying specialized social workers and counselors to provide trauma-informed care for survivors and grieving households who are grappling with the suddenness of the loss.

The ministry will also evaluate the immediate material and financial needs of the bereaved to mitigate the sudden economic shock and ensure that the families are not left to navigate the aftermath alone.

Commitment to Safety and Future Prevention

Beyond the immediate relief efforts, the Ministry emphasized the critical importance of enforcing safety measures in water transportation. The official release called for a “stricter adherence to established safety protocols” to prevent such avoidable occurrences in the future, particularly on major inland water bodies like the Volta Lake.

The Ministry highlighted that the mandatory use of life jackets, the prevention of overloading, and better weather monitoring are essential components of a safe maritime environment. The MoGCSP reaffirmed its core mandate to protect and ensure that vulnerable populations receive the necessary care and support.

The official release concluded with a firm pledge that the Ministry stands in solidarity with all those impacted by the tragedy and assures the public that “no one would be left behind” in the recovery efforts.

The Ministry has promised to maintain an active presence in the district, monitoring the progress of the social welfare teams and ensuring that the promises of support are fully realized for every mother, father, and child affected by this tragedy. The public is urged to remain cautious and prioritize safety during lake travels to honor the memory of those lost.
