The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, has officially launched the Mfantsipim School’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
The event, dubbed “Mfantsipim at 150: Shaping Ghana’s Greatest Minds,” was held at the Palms Convention Center, La. It brought together alumni, traditional authorities, government officials, and students, marking a significant journey in the school’s efforts to deliver good academic and training.
The late Kofi Annan, who was a former United Nations Secretary General, and Tsatu Tsikata, a renowned academic and accomplished legal practitioner, are among the notable alumni.
People from across all walks of life gathered to celebrate the historical milestone of the institution that has nurtured great minds and produced top officials and people of repute in this country.
Mfantsipim, a school founded in 1876, is highly recognized as one of the country’s best senior high schools. Affectionately referred to as the “school of gentlemen,” it has some of its alumni rising to influential positions in the country and gaining global recognition as well.

Vice President Commends Mfantsipim
In her speech, the Vice President commended the school for its continual dedication to academic excellence and moral transformation. She opined that the school has built a formidable legacy that is not only centered around achieving academic heights but has, over the years, inculcated moral training and positive behavioral change in the students.
She said that the school’s history serves as a reminder of the revolutionary ability of education when combined with strong values and a sense of purpose. She entreated current students to be inspired by the achievements of the past alumni and also do well to enhance innovation and critical analysis in present challenges in order to add to the growth of the country.
She said, education is an imperative tool for national development, and its contribution cannot be downplayed. The celebration was marked with several activities, which included a durbar, cultural displays, and exhibitions.
The Vice President also stated that the school has served as an avenue for nurturing great minds in both the corporate and intellectual environments over the century.
Speaking at the occasion, the speaker showered heartfelt praise and adoration for the school’s ability to train and transform the minds of young people. The Vice President asserted that Mfantsipim is a “school with a strong record in Ghana’s educational and national development.”
She traced the history she shares with the school as the one who served as the guest of honour during the school’s 140th anniversary celebration, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity.
The Vice President shared fond memories of her father and friend, a student of Adisadel College, disagreeing on issues. She noted that the healthy competition that exists between them is based on mutual respect and intellectual engagement, and she reiterated that this should be the foundation of public discourse.
Celebrating Legacy, Inspiring Future Leaders

The Minister for Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, who was in attendance at the event, praised the Mfantsipim school as being the first, oldest, and leader of Ghana’s education. He stated that the school has played a central part in developing education in Ghana.
He expressed concern, saying,“If Kofi Annan were alive today, he would exude disappointment and ask nagging questions about the statutes of international law and international diplomacy, which are Mfantsipim values.”
He further communicated to the President, John Dramani Mahama’s acceptance to be the guest of honour on the 14th of November 2026 for Mfantsipim’s 150 years celebration.
He praised some notable alumni of the school and expressed his gratitude to the headmaster for chairing the review committee on analyzing and making recommendations on the school placements system.
This, he noted, has been of great help. He also praised the healthy rivalry that exists between the schools and concluded by expressing his joy in the contributions the school has made towards the development in Ghana. He said plans are underway to improve the infrastructure challenges in schools to improve and enhance education.
