The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ghana has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa to Ghana following reports of xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians. The move signals a strong diplomatic response by the Government of Ghana to recent developments captured in widely circulated videos showing intimidation and harassment of migrants.

The Acting High Commissioner, Thando Dalamba, was invited to the Ministry by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to formally convey Ghana’s concerns over the safety and treatment of its citizens abroad. The engagement forms part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to address rising tensions and prevent further escalation.

The summons comes amid growing regional concern about xenophobic incidents in parts of South Africa, particularly in areas such as KwaZulu-Natal, where foreign nationals have reportedly been targeted. Ghana’s intervention reflects a broader commitment to safeguarding its citizens and promoting peaceful coexistence across the African continent.

Ghana Summons Envoy over Attacks

According to the Ministry, the objective of the meeting was to express strong concern regarding the reported acts of intimidation against foreign nationals. The Minister referenced a specific incident in KwaZulu-Natal, where a Ghanaian resident was reportedly confronted and asked to justify his legal status before being told to leave the country.

He described such conduct as unacceptable, noting that it undermines the dignity and rights of law-abiding individuals. The Ministry further indicated that follow-up reports suggest escalating tensions, with some foreign nationals reportedly advised to remain indoors for their safety.

While no fatalities or injuries involving Ghanaians have been officially recorded in the current situation, the Minister recalled that similar incidents in the past had led to loss of lives and destruction of property. He stressed the importance of taking proactive measures to prevent a recurrence of such outcomes.

Ghana has therefore registered a formal protest and called on South African authorities to take immediate and effective steps to ensure the protection of all foreign nationals, particularly Ghanaians residing in the country.

Minister Demands Protection for Citizens

The Foreign Affairs Minister emphasized Ghana’s expectation that South African authorities will act swiftly to restore calm and prevent further incidents. He urged relevant institutions to intensify monitoring, enforce the law, and hold perpetrators accountable.

He also highlighted the longstanding historical and diplomatic ties between Ghana and South Africa, recalling Ghana’s support for the anti-apartheid struggle and the broader spirit of African unity. According to him, such shared history should serve as a foundation for mutual respect and cooperation rather than division.

The Minister stressed that acts of xenophobia contradict the principles of African solidarity and undermine efforts to build a united and peaceful continent. He called on all Africans to reject actions that promote hostility and instead work toward strengthening continental integration.
