His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene and 16th custodian of the Golden Stool, is today marking his 76th birthday, an occasion blending solemn traditional rites with widespread national admiration for a reign that has profoundly shaped peace, education, and development in Ghana.
Born Nana Barima Kwaku Duah on May 6, 1950, in Kumasi, the Asantehene ascended the Golden Stool on April 26, 1999.
In line with Asante customs, his actual birthday is observed as a sacred day reserved for spiritual purification rites and soul consecration at the Manhyia Palace.
Public festivities are deferred to allow the monarch to commune with the ancestors and reinforce the spiritual foundations of his leadership.

Palace sources indicate that today’s private observances, led by custodians of Asante tradition and palace elders, underscore the deep intertwining of kingship, spirituality, and cultural continuity in the Asante Kingdom.
A grand public thanksgiving service has been slated for Sunday, May 10, 2026, at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Cathedral in Kumasi, commencing at 9:00 a.m.
The event will be followed by an exclusive dinner at the Manhyia Palace for invited guests, including paramount chiefs (Nananom), queen mothers, clergy, government officials, and dignitaries from across Ghana and the diaspora.
Otumfuo Kyeame Baffour Kantankrankyi made the announcement during a recent Asanteman Council meeting, urging all Nananom to adjust their schedules and participate in offering prayers for the King’s continued health, wisdom, and long reign.

Analysts describe his reign as one that has elevated the Asante Kingdom’s stature both locally and internationally while reinforcing its role as a pillar of national unity.
The Asantehene’s ability to blend deep respect for tradition with forward-looking governance continues to earn him respect across political divides.
As drums beat reverently at Manhyia Palace today and messages of goodwill flood traditional and social media platforms, many invoking the blessing “Nana wo tiri nkwa!” (Long life to you, King!) Ghanaians reflect on a leader whose legacy remains etched in gold.
The story of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is far from complete. At 76, with over two and a half decades of experience on the Golden Stool, his continued guidance remains vital to Asanteman and the broader Ghanaian nation.
