Wes Streeting Resigns as Health Secretary, Deepening Starmer Leadership Crisis

Wes Streeting has resigned as health secretary in a dramatic escalation of Labour’s internal crisis, noting that he has “lost confidence” in Keir Starmer’s leadership and warning that the Prime Minister will not lead the party into the next general election.

The resignation marks one of the most serious challenges yet to Starmer’s authority, coming amid weeks of speculation about a possible leadership contest and growing unrest within Labour ranks following disappointing election results.

In his resignation letter, Streeting said remaining in government would be “dishonourable and unprincipled” after concluding that he could no longer support the Prime Minister’s leadership. “Where we need vision, we have a vacuum. Where we need direction, we have drift. This was underscored by your speech on Monday,” he stated.

The Former Health Secretary also accused the leadership of failing to manage dissent within the party.

“Leaders take responsibility, but too often that has meant other people falling on their swords. You also need to listen to your colleagues, including backbenchers, and the heavy-handed approach to dissenting voices diminishes our politics.”

Streeting’s resignation immediately intensified speculation that he could trigger a leadership contest, although he stopped short of formally declaring a challenge. Instead, he called for what he described as a “battle of ideas” within the party.

In one of the most consequential passages of the letter, Streeting declared that the Prime Minister’s time at the helm was limited, stating, “It is now clear that you will not lead the Labour Party into the next general election.”

Streeting’s departure follows weeks of turbulence within government and comes just days after Labour suffered heavy losses in local elections across England, Scotland and Wales. He directly linked those defeats to broader dissatisfaction with the government’s direction.

Streeting warned that. “Progressives across our country understand this threat and our responsibility to confront it, but they are increasingly losing faith that the Labour Party is capable of rising to our historic responsibility.”

Despite his criticisms, Streeting offered praise for Starmer’s achievements, including leading Labour to a surprise general election victory and his handling of international affairs.

“You have many great strengths that I admire. You led our party to a victory few thought possible in 2024 and I was proud to fight alongside you in the trenches of that campaign. You have shown courage and statesmanship on the world stage – not least in keeping Britain out of the war in Iran.”

The resignation is expected to trigger intense lobbying within Labour as MPs weigh whether to back a leadership challenge. Streeting indicated that, the future of the party should be determined by “a battle of ideas, not of personalities or petty factionalism.” “It needs to be broad, and it needs the best possible field of candidates,” he added, opening the door for wider leadership competition.

Attention now turns to whether Streeting has secured enough parliamentary support to formally trigger a contest. Under Labour rules, 81 MPs are required to initiate a leadership race. While his resignation strongly signals intent, it does not in itself confirm that the threshold has been met.

Earlier in the day, Chancellor Rachel Reeves cautioned that a leadership contest could “plunge the country into chaos,” reflecting growing concern in Downing Street about the political and economic consequences of internal division.

Streeting’s resignation now opens up broader questions about Labour’s direction and the balance of power within the party.

Greens Dismiss Streeting Bid as Labour Crisis Deepens

Meanwhile, Green Party Deputy leader Zack Polanski has sharply criticised Wes Streeting following his resignation as health secretary, warning that a potential leadership bid would represent a continuation of the same policies that have alienated voters.

Responding to growing speculation that Streeting could challenge Sir Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership, Polanski argued that replacing the prime minister with the former health secretary would do little to address the country’s underlying political and economic frustrations. “If Labour thinks Wes Streeting is the answer, they obviously don’t know the question the country is asking,” he stated.

Polanski indicated that the recent local election results demonstrated widespread public dissatisfaction with the mainstream.

“Last week’s elections show the country is crying out for a break from the failed status quo. Keir Starmer has been unable and unwilling to break with an economic model that has fuelled the affordability crisis, and this is why we have said he must go.”

He added that, “Wes Streeting would be more of the same, but even worse, a factional and divisive politician, a close ally of Peter Mandelson, who favours an economy even more tilted to the wealthy, and whose record as health secretary is more privatisation and more personal donations from private healthcare.”
