New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs play in the 2026 NBA finals

The 2026 NBA Finals have arrived with two franchises standing on the doorstep of a defining moment as the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs are set to battle for the ultimate.

The New York Knicks are chasing a long-awaited return to championship glory after more than five decades without the NBA title, while the San Antonio Spurs are looking to crown a remarkable rise led by the extraordinary talent of Victor Wembanyama.

The best-of-seven series begins on Wednesday, June 3, with the Knicks entering as one of the hottest teams in the league after a dominant postseason run.

They surged into the finals on the back of 11 consecutive playoff victories and appears to be playing its best basketball at the most important time of the season.

San Antonio Spurs, meanwhile, arrives with growing confidence after eliminating the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in a dramatic seven-game Western Conference Finals. The Spurs have accelerated their rebuilding timeline and now stand just four wins away from another championship banner.

Brunson and Wembanyama Headline a Clash of Contrasts

Much of the attention in this series will center on the battle between Knicks star Jalen Brunson and Spurs sensation Victor Wembanyama.

Brunson has been the engine of New York’s offense throughout the playoffs. His ability to create scoring opportunities, break down defenses and deliver in clutch situations has made him one of the most dangerous players in the postseason.

The veteran guard has consistently controlled the pace of games and elevated the performances of those around him.

Stopping Brunson will be among San Antonio’s biggest priorities. The Spurs successfully limited reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the conference finals by employing aggressive defensive schemes and rotating multiple defenders onto him.

They are expected to use a similar strategy against Brunson, forcing him into difficult decisions and attempting to disrupt his rhythm.

At the other end of the floor, Victor Wembanyama remains the league’s most intimidating defensive presence. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year continues to transform games with his length, timing and mobility.

Beyond his shot-blocking numbers, Wembanyama alters countless possessions simply through his presence near the basket.

The Knicks will likely challenge him by involving Karl-Anthony Towns in pick-and-pop situations and stretching the floor. Towns’ outside shooting could force Wembanyama away from the paint, creating opportunities for New York’s guards and wings to attack.

Supporting Casts Could Decide the Championship

While the spotlight will naturally fall on the stars, both teams possess depth capable of influencing the outcome of the series.

For San Antonio, rookie guard Dylan Harper has emerged as a reliable contributor despite his age. Harper’s composure, scoring ability and confidence in high-pressure moments have earned the trust of head coach Mitch Johnson.

Alongside Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson, he gives the Spurs multiple offensive options beyond Wembanyama.

The Knicks have also benefited from valuable contributions off the bench. Deuce McBride has provided energy and playmaking, Landry Shamet has delivered timely perimeter shooting and Mitchell Robinson has strengthened New York’s rebounding presence. Their ability to maintain production when the starters rest could prove decisive in a tightly contested series.

One statistical category heavily favours the Knicks entering the Finals. Through three playoff rounds, New York Knicks own an effective field-goal percentage of 59.2 percent, a figure that would rank among the best in postseason history.

The team has combined elite three-point shooting with relentless interior scoring, producing one of the most efficient offenses in the league.

However, the Spurs present a unique challenge. During the regular season, New York generated fewer paint attempts against San Antonio than against any other opponent, largely due to Wembanyama’s influence around the rim.

If the Knicks are to maintain their offensive efficiency, perimeter shooting may become even more important.

The Finals also carry emotional significance for New York. The franchise has not celebrated an NBA championship since 1973, and expectations throughout the city continue to grow with every victory.

Yet rather than appearing burdened by history, the Knicks have embraced the pressure and thrived under it.

San Antonio, meanwhile, enters the series with little to lose and everything to gain. With Wembanyama leading a talented young core, the Spurs appear poised to contend for years to come.

Whether this series marks the end of a 53-year wait or the beginning of another Spurs dynasty remains to be seen. What is certain is that the 2026 NBA Finals promise a compelling battle between experience, momentum and the future of the NBA.
