The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Information and Communications Committee and Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Honourable Matthew Nyindam has questioned the relevance of a proposal that could require identity verification before access to pornographic websites. He argued that government should instead concentrate on policies that directly improve the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.

The Kpandai MP stated that citizens elected the current administration with expectations of improved living conditions and better public services. He therefore urged the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Honourable Samuel Nartey George, to focus on issues affecting households and businesses.

Furthermore, Honourable Nyindam cited the cost of data and telecommunications services as areas that deserve sustained attention. He indicated that affordability is a concern for many Ghanaians who rely on digital services for work, education and communication.

The Ranking Member also referred to recent discussions surrounding the proposed National Information Technology Agency Bill. He contended that concerns remain over aspects of the legislation and their potential impact on innovation and technological development.

“We have a lot of concerns under his ministry. I will appeal to him to focus more on how best we can reduce data costs and make phone calls affordable. Instead of focusing on such proposals, he should concentrate on issues that bring direct relief to Ghanaians.”

Honourable Matthew Nyindam

The Member of Parliament further questioned the practical value of requiring adults to present identification before accessing adult websites. In his estimation, public policy should be measured against the benefits it delivers to citizens.

Meanwhile, Honourable Nyindam pointed to ongoing public discussions about the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill. He referenced the amendments introduced to the legislation and suggested that the matter remains an important subject of national debate.

The Kpandai MP also observed that the Communications Minister previously outlined plans to introduce several legislative proposals before Parliament. He expressed the view that attention should be placed on those commitments and their implementation.

“Governance is serious business. He has a lot of work to do and should concern himself with things that would bring less burdens to the people of this country.”

Honourable Matthew Nyindam

Additionally, the Ranking Member argued that Parliament would carefully examine any proposal brought before the House. He stressed that House would assess its significance and public value before taking a position on it.

Honourable Nyindam reiterated that national priorities should be centered on economic and social challenges confronting citizens. He added that public expectations are increasingly focused on policies that provide tangible benefits and improve livelihoods.

Child Protection Efforts Should Respect Adult Privacy

The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Information and Communications Committee, Honourable Matthew Nyindam supported the measures aimed at protecting children online while cautioning against policies that could infringe on the privacy of adults.

He acknowledged growing concerns about young people being exposed to harmful content on the internet. He said efforts to shield minors from inappropriate material would receive public backing.

The Kpandai MP noted that existing digital safeguards are intended to restrict children’s access to certain online platforms and content. Subsequently, he suggested that policymakers should focus on strengthening those mechanisms where gaps are identified.

“Nobody will have a problem when a law is crafted in such a way that we want to keep our children away from harmful influences. If we decide to legislate to protect our children, I will go for it.”

Honourable Matthew Nyindam

However, Honourable Nyindam took issue with the proposal that could require adults to verify their identities before accessing pornographic websites. He argued that such measures pose important questions about privacy and personal freedoms in the digital space.

The Member of Parliament stressed the need to distinguish between regulations designed for minors and those affecting adults. He stated that while children require protection online, adults should retain the freedom to make personal choices within the bounds of the law.

On the reactions of Members of Parliament from both sides of the House, Honourable Nyindam noted that the proposal is still at an early stage of consideration and remains too new to attract extensive debate. He indicated that the matter would likely generate public and parliamentary engagement should it advance through the policy process.
