The Ministry of Health has described recent developments at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital as unfortunate following industrial action by members of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association and the Nurses Chapter. In a press release issued by the Public Relations Unit, the Ministry explained that the suspension of Chief Executive Officer, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo stemmed from concerns over compliance with established administrative procedures.
The statement indicated that the decision was taken after careful consideration and was guided by the need to strengthen accountability within public health institutions. It added that patient safety and administrative discipline is the central element to the action taken against the hospital administrator.
According to the Ministry, the matter arose after a public announcement on the cessation of admissions at the Accident and Emergency Centre of the hospital. The Public Relations Unit explained that the announcement conflicted with a directive issued by President John Dramani Mahama on access to emergency healthcare services.

The Ministry clarified that the suspension is unrelated to arrangements between the hospital and the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate. It further stressed that the action affected Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo in his capacity as Chief Executive Officer and did not impact his role as a medical practitioner.
The Ministry recalled that during the State of the Nation Address, President Mahama directed all public health facilities to provide emergency care to patients who require urgent attention. The Ministry noted that the directive sought to ensure uninterrupted access to critical healthcare services across the country.
“The decision was carefully considered in the interest of institutional accountability, patient safety and the need to uphold administrative discipline within the health sector. The suspension is intended to facilitate an independent investigation and provide appropriate remedies going forward.”

The statement expressed concern that the closure announcement was made without prior approval from the hospital’s governing board and the Ministry of Health. Authorities therefore viewed the development as a matter requiring further examination through established procedures.

The statement explained that the suspension is an administrative measure designed to create room for an impartial investigation. The Ministry stated that the process would establish the circumstances surrounding the decision and identify corrective actions where necessary.
The release also appealed for calm among healthcare professionals while engagements continue. It emphasised that public confidence in the health system depends on adherence to approved administrative processes.
“Emergency healthcare services occupy a critical place within the national health system. Decisions affecting access to such services must follow established procedures and receive the necessary authorisation.”

Ministry Appeals For Cooperation Amid Healthcare Improvement Drive
The Ministry of Health appealed to healthcare workers at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to return to work while discussions continue over their concerns. The Ministry stressed that dialogue is the most effective avenue for resolving grievances within the health sector.
It also indicated that cooperation among stakeholders is essential to protect patients and maintain uninterrupted healthcare delivery. The statement emphasised that concerns raised by staff deserve prompt attention through recognised dispute resolution mechanisms.
The Ministry explained that the suspension of Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo is not intended to discourage efforts at protecting patients. Instead, authorities stated that the action seeks to reinforce accountability, proper communication and compliance with national health directives.

Meanwhile, the Ministry acknowledged operational challenges facing the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Centre. It noted that management has a duty to ensure safe conditions for both patients and staff while observing established procedures.
The statement highlighted several interventions being pursued to strengthen healthcare delivery across the country. These include the retooling of major hospitals and the introduction of a National Bed Management System to improve referrals and bed allocation.
The Ministry also disclosed that preparatory work continues toward operationalising the National Emergency Centre at Burma Camp. Additional efforts are focused on completing selected Agenda 111 hospital projects and expanding specialised healthcare services.
The Ministry noted that Cathlabs are being established at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and Tamale Teaching Hospital. Plans are also advancing for the creation of a National Accident and Emergency Centre in Accra.

The Ministry assured the public that concerns raised by doctors and nurses are receiving urgent attention from the Health Minister. The statement further revealed that work on the Sewua Hospital Project is progressing steadily with completion expected before the end of 2026.
“The Ministry remains committed to protecting the interests of patients while ensuring a safe and conducive working environment for health workers. We therefore urge affected staff to reconsider their decision and return to work in the interest of the public.”
