Acclaimed British-Nigerian singer-songwriter Talay Riley, known professionally for his soulful R&B vocals and hit-making pen, was fatally stabbed in East London on June 5, 2026, police confirmed through widespread tributes and reports.

The 35-year-old artist, whose real name was Mark Olayinka Orabiyi, died in hospital after sustaining multiple stab wounds in a residential garden near Pankhurst Avenue in Silvertown.

Metropolitan Police officers were called to the scene around 9 a.m. following reports of a stabbing. They discovered Riley with serious injuries in the garden of a property on nearby Rayleigh Road.

Despite the rapid response of paramedics and emergency treatment, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. A second man, in his 20s, was also injured in the incident and hospitalized with non-life-threatening wounds.

Within hours, three people, a 27-year-old man, a 24-year-old man, and a 25-year-old woman were arrested nearby on suspicion of murder. They remain in custody as homicide detectives continue their investigation.

Officers have appealed for witnesses, CCTV footage, or any information about the events leading up to the stabbing on what was described as a quiet residential street close to local schools.

Born on July 10, 1990, Riley rose to prominence as a teenager during the grime and Channel U era. At just 18, he signed his first major publishing deal with Global Publishing after co-writing Chipmunk’s (now Chip) UK number-one single “Oopsy Daisy.”

He also featured on the hit “Look for Me,” helping launch Chip’s career in a collaboration the rapper has repeatedly credited as pivotal.

Riley, often known by the alias Tension, blended smooth R&B with pop sensibilities. He released his own music while building an impressive songwriting resume that reached global audiences.

His credits include co-writing Khalid’s breakout hit “Young Dumb & Broke,” The Chainsmokers’ “Who Do You Love,” Jessie J’s “Who’s Laughing Now,” and tracks for artists such as Dua Lipa, Usher, Chris Brown, Nick Jonas, H.E.R., Kehlani, FLO, Wiley, Tinie Tempah, and Major Lazer.

He earned Grammy recognition for his contributions to major releases that collectively streamed and sold in the billions.

Beyond the studio, Riley performed live, touring with high-profile acts including Skepta, Usher on arena dates, and Trey Songz. He signed recording deals with labels like Jive/Sony, RCA, and Island Records at different stages of his career.

Colleagues described him as a versatile creative force equally comfortable as a lead vocalist with diamond grills and braids on stage or as a behind-the-scenes architect shaping chart-topping records.

Public Reactions

News of his death sent shockwaves through the UK music industry. Chip posted an emotional tribute: “You ain’t deserve to go out like that fam… Your pen will live forever… From pirate radio and Channel U teens to #1 and platinum. RIP Talay (Tension) Riley.” Stormzy wrote simply, “I’m sorry bro.”

Other tributes poured in from Craig David, Wretch 32, and many more, highlighting Riley’s generosity in mentoring younger artists and his enduring friendships forged in London’s vibrant urban music scene.

His brother, producer Scribz Riley, and family have been inundated with messages of condolence. One industry statement captured the collective grief: “Talay’s talent reached billions… He will be remembered for his creativity, passion, and the lasting impact he had on everyone fortunate enough to work with him.

The tragedy has reignited conversations about knife crime in London. Despite overall reductions in some violent crime categories, fatal stabbings continue to claim young lives in the capital, particularly within communities tied to music and creative industries.

Local residents expressed dismay that violence erupted on a street near schools in a normally quiet part of Silvertown.

Riley’s Nigerian-British heritage was a source of pride. He often bridged UK urban sounds with broader international pop and R&B influences, representing a generation of Black British artists who achieved global success.

From early pirate radio appearances to co-penning songs streamed hundreds of millions of times, his journey embodied talent, hustle, and resilience.

As investigations proceed, police have urged anyone with information to contact the Met’s homicide unit or Crimestoppers anonymously. Riley’s family has requested privacy as they grieve, while the music world pauses to honor a prolific talent taken far too soon.

Friends remember not only the hits but the man -charismatic, supportive, and driven. In an industry where behind-the-scenes writers often remain unsung, Talay Riley’s voice and words left an indelible mark.

His passing at 35 represents a profound loss for British music and for those who knew him personally.
